🌿 Yoga Beyond the Mat: Learning to Love My Body 🌿

There’s something about becoming a mother that shifts the way you see your own body. Sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse.

We’re often forced to learn to accept a body that has changed through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. But there’s also a sweetness I never expected: seeing pieces of yourself reflected in the little people you created.

All of a sudden, I find myself not just accepting, but genuinely loving parts of myself that I once wished were different.

My son has my chin. Growing up, I was teased for having a “butt chin.” But now I see that same little dimple on his sweet face. If you’ve ever met my son, you know God practically copied and pasted my whole face onto a little boy. 😂❤️

How could I ever hate a part of my face when it belongs to one of the people I love most in the world?

Now, in my second postpartum journey, I’ve been learning to make peace with new parts of my body.

My daughter takes after me in being petite. She has an adorably round little belly and the most squishable little arm and leg rolls. When I look down at my own short, thick legs or my round little belly—much rounder after two pregnancies—I see her.

And somehow, I find myself loving those parts of me a little more because they remind me of her.

How could I speak badly about my body when I see those same features in this perfect little person I adore?

Yoga philosophy teaches **Santosha**, or contentment: practicing acceptance of what is rather than constantly chasing what we think we should be.

For me, motherhood has given that idea a whole new meaning.

Sometimes I wonder if God gave my children the exact parts of me that I needed to learn to love in myself.

Maybe our bodies don't need to be fixed as much as they need to be seen with a little more compassion.

And maybe one of the greatest gifts we can give our children is learning to speak about ourselves with the same love we use when we look at them. ❤️

✨ What part of yourself have you learned to appreciate in a new way?

I’ve been toying with an idea… 👀 What would you think about a weekly virtual yoga class—either through Facebook Live or a Zoom invite?

I’m especially thinking this could be a good option for some of my students with young kids, including those of you who have taken my prenatal or postpartum classes and have a hard time making it to an in-person class.

Think:
🧘‍♀️ Cameras on or off
👶 Kids welcome or yoga after bedtime
🏡 From the comfort of your own home
💻 No commute, no childcare logistics, just a little time to move and breathe

Basically… yoga that meets you where you are in this season of life. ❤️

So I want to know: Would you join a weekly virtual class?

And if so, what days and times would work best for you? Drop your thoughts in the comments—I’m listening!

Image from Bébé Finn because when Theo saw it, he immediately said, “Mommy, it you!” 😂 I am not, in fact, a cartoon mom teaching yoga over Zoom.

While an entire philosophy and ancient practice cannot be summarized in a single post, consider this a jumping off point to your understanding of yoga. Many people first come to yoga because of its positive effects on the body. And while that alone can be life-changing, yoga also offers a rich philosophical tradition that invites us to better understand ourselves and the way we move through the world.

This month, our community theme is STUDY. What if we approached our practice with a little extra curiosity? As always, you are encouraged to make your practice your own, but perhaps this opens up an opportunity to be more curious about the meaning and intention behind your practice.

If you'd like to continue the journey, you're invited to join our FWFG Book Club as we explore one of yoga's foundational texts, Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, together this month. (join at FWFG.COM)

A few months back I shared that I taught yoga to my son's preschool class. Last night I had the opportunity to return to the school and teach yoga again—this time to the moms. Many of them were trying yoga for the very first time.

We moved gently, talked about some of the back and hip aches that can come with motherhood, laughed together, and practiced a simple meditation.

One of the yogic principles I think about often is seva—selfless service. Seva doesn't always mean serving somewhere far away or doing something extraordinary. Sometimes it means sharing what you can with the community you're already part of, strengthening the connections that already exist, and simply showing up for one another.

I'm grateful my family is part of this community and for the opportunity to connect, serve, and share yoga with these incredible moms. 💛

It also left me wondering: What gifts or skills do each of us have that could make our own communities just a little stronger? 💛

A few weeks ago, I shared that I was feeling burnt out from teaching yoga and that I needed to find more balance in my schedule. This summer, I've intentionally scaled back my teaching to make more time for my family, my own practice, and rest.

The one class I've kept on my schedule is my Thursday evening class at the YMCA.

This week, I had an interaction with a semi-regular student that reminded me exactly why I wanted to become a yoga teacher in the first place.

At the end of every class, I guide students through a body scan meditation as they settle into Savasana. It's a simple practice of bringing awareness to each part of the body, inviting it to soften and let go.

After class, a student told me she's been using that same body scan at home every night to help herself fall asleep.

It may seem like a small thing, but to me, it was everything.

Knowing that someone took something they learned in my class and carried it into their everyday life is exactly why I teach. Yoga isn't just about what happens on the mat for an hour each week. It's about having tools to support us through our daily lives—whether that's finding calm before bed, taking a steady breath during a stressful moment, or simply feeling a little more at home in our own bodies.

It was a beautiful reminder that teaching isn't measured by how many people are in the room. Even if my classes aren't the biggest, they matter to the people who show up.

And sometimes, making a difference for just one person is more than enough to remind you why you started in the first place. 💙
