College lacrosse rosters are getting older, and that changes the math for high school players.

Under the new 5-in-5 eligibility framework, more players are using their full five years. The 2027 graduate transfer portal opened October 1, which means experienced, older players are filling college rosters.

For families, the takeaway is simple: talent alone does not get you on the field early. Readiness does. Players who can handle the stick at speed, defend their position, and make decisions under pressure are the ones who see minutes as freshmen.

What actually moves the needle:

• Consistent stick work, all year
• Competing against older, stronger players whenever you can
• Film you can watch and learn from
• Being honest about which of those three is your weakest

The recruiting timeline starts earlier than most families think. The work starts earlier than that.

The ball players watch in the pros is headed to the college game.

Fluorescent green or yellow balls become allowable in NCAA men’s lacrosse in 2027 and required in 2028. In 2027, the home team selects the ball color and must notify the visiting team at least one week in advance. Other colors (white, orange, lime green and pink) remain permitted if both coaches agree.

Women’s lacrosse has long used yellow balls, and the PLL already plays with fluorescent balls. Get comfortable tracking and catching one now to be ready for the change.

So proud of this team battling through the elements and playing 5 games in one day. Came up just shy in the championship game but gave them a run. Extremely proud of our younger players and the improvement since the summer. Back to the grind to keep improving for the next tournament.

At Myrtle Beach Lightning, that work includes:

• Wall ball reps between sessions
• Travel lacrosse against better competition
• Coaches who tell players the truth and provide clear direction

Progress comes from repeated practice, honest feedback, and meaningful competition. It does not come from clubs simply leading with labels like “elite” or “premier.”

The SCHSL announced a change on July 30, 2026: the transfer penalty is eliminated for first-time senior transfers.

Clean defense starts before the reach.

In the girls’ game, strong defenders rely on positioning, footwork, and discipline, not chasing contact. Stay between your opponent and the space she wants, move your feet, and keep your stick active without reaching or forcing a play.

Depending on the age group, skill level, and league, rules may differ on stick checks, contact, and defensive positioning. Reaching into an opponent’s space or initiating illegal contact can be penalized, so players should learn and follow the current rules for their program.

When defenders communicate, recover with their feet, and pressure within the rules, they can create turnovers legally.
