“Mom, do we have to go on vacation? I want to spend the break hanging out with my friends.”
“Do we have to eat at that place again?”
“Do we have to go to the park? It’s so boorrring.”
Vacations with my kids used to be so much easier. When they were younger, we’d plan a trip – any trip – and my kids were enthusiastic, eager to hop in the car or on the plane (regardless of how long the trip was), and they never had an issue with our destination or what we did when we got there. It didn’t matter if we were darting out for a quick road trip over a long weekend or heading out for a 10-day vacation, they were “in.”
Boy, have things changed.
Now that my kids are teenagers planning a vacation is quite the task now that they know what they like.
They each have strong opinions about when we should go, where we should go, where we should eat, how long we’ll be gone, where we should stay and what we should do while we’re there. In fact, just rounding them up at the same time and navigating around their schedules has become such a challenge, it’s a miracle we go on any vacations at all.
After traveling with my kids countless times, I’ve figured out that packing a very large chill pill, a sense of humor and a few sanity-saving tips is the key to a successful vacation with teenagers. Here are a few “traveling with teens” tips I’ve learned that might help make your next family vacation stress-free, peaceful and more enjoyable for the entire family.
So the next time you head out on vacation with your teenager just know things happen, which means you need to be prepared to expect the unexpected and go with the flow.
Even though you might have to navigate around your son’s mood one day or adjust the day’s plans due to your daughter’s awful period cramps, take it in stride. These days and moments with your kids are fleeting. Soon enough they’ll be off on their own raising their own family and you’ll be longing for these crazy, tumultuous vacations. Relish in the special moments, regardless of how insignificant they may seem. It may seem far off in the future, but one day soon enough, these treasured family vacations will all be a distant memory.
