Now that the spring athletic season has come to a close, we would like to take a moment to recognize the student-athletes selected by their coaches as Athletes of the Month during the spring season. These athletes demonstrated exceptional dedication, leadership, sportsmanship, and commitment to their teams both in competition and in practice.

Please join us in congratulating our April Athletes of the Month, Esther Armstrong and Shane Stewart!

Esther Armstrong, an 11th-grade student at MECS, is a dedicated multi-sport athlete who competes in soccer for Stockbridge Valley during the fall and track and field in the spring. In addition to her athletic accomplishments, Esther is actively involved in the MECS Drama Club, demonstrating her commitment both on the field and on the stage.

Esther's favorite sports movie is McFarland, USA, her favorite food is sushi, and she gets ready for competition by listening to "Centuries" by Fall Out Boy.

Her sports idol is her older brother, whose determination and perseverance continue to inspire her. Watching him overcome challenges and continue his soccer career at the collegiate level has motivated Esther to push herself and embrace a healthy sibling rivalry.

When asked what advice she would give younger athletes, Esther said, "Do the sport that makes you happy, not the sport that everyone else plays."

One of Esther's favorite high school athletic memories is simply being a part of the track team. She shared that every track meet, no matter how cold the weather may be, is filled with laughter, fun, and memories alongside her teammates.

Esther would like to thank her mother and her brothers for always supporting her, providing advice, and pushing her to be the best version of herself.

After graduation, Esther plans to attend college to study forestry and hopes to continue playing soccer at the collegiate level.

Shane Stewart, a senior at MECS, is a dedicated three-sport athlete who competes in soccer for Stockbridge Valley, and both indoor track and outdoor track at MECS. In addition to his athletic accomplishments, Shane is also an active member of the MECS Drama Club, demonstrating his commitment to both athletics and the arts.

Shane's favorite sports movie is The Benchwarmers, his favorite meal is chicken cordon bleu, and before competition he enjoys listening to "Love" by Keyshia Cole.

His sports idol is Quincy Wilson, whose accomplishments at such a young age have inspired Shane to pursue excellence and continue pushing himself to improve.

When asked what advice he would give younger athletes, Shane said, "Get good sleep and drink water."

One of Shane's favorite athletic memories was qualifying for the state qualifier meet during his freshman year, an achievement that left a lasting impact on his high school athletic career.

Shane would like to thank his parents, coaches, and friends for their constant support, encouragement, and belief in him throughout his athletic journey.

After graduation, Shane plans to attend Mohawk Valley Community College to study Physical Education.

Congratulations to Esther Armstrong and Shane Stewart, our April Athletes of the Month! Your dedication, leadership, and commitment to excellence have made a positive impact on the MECS athletic community. We are proud to celebrate your accomplishments and look forward to all that lies ahead for both of you.

Now that we are in the midst of the spring athletic season, it is important that we still take time to recognize our final Athletes of the Month selected from the winter season. Please join us in celebrating our February Athletes of the Month for their dedication, perseverance, and impact on the MECS athletic community. Congratulations to Isaac Bogacz and Addison Shantal!

Isaac Bogacz, a senior at MECS, is a dedicated three-sport athlete competing in football, wrestling, and baseball. His commitment to athletics across multiple seasons reflects a strong work ethic and determination to continuously improve. Isaac’s favorite sports movie is Greater, and his favorite pre-competition meal is Taco Bell. Before competition, he gets locked in by listening to “Still Think About You” by A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie.

Isaac looks up to Josh Allen as his sports hero, inspired by his journey from having no offers out of high school to walking on at a junior college and eventually becoming one of the top players in the NFL. That same mindset is reflected in the advice he shares with younger athletes: “If you want to be better at a sport, it starts by working in the offseason.” One of his favorite high school sports memories is winning the state championship in the snow this year—a moment that showcased resilience and teamwork. Isaac would like to thank his mother, Tabbitha, and his father, Jason, for always believing in him and pushing him to improve. After graduation, he plans to join the electricians union.

Addison Shantal, also a senior at MECS, is a talented three-sport athlete competing in field hockey, indoor track, and softball. Beyond athletics, she is actively involved in FFA as Vice President and contributes to the yearbook, demonstrating leadership and dedication to her school community. Addison’s favorite movie is The Sandlot, and her favorite meal is steak and potatoes. Before competition, she listens to “Wherever I May Roam” by Metallica to get focused.

Addison looks up to Erin Matson as her athletic role model. After a standout college field hockey career, Matson became the youngest Division I head coach at UNC and led her team to an NCAA Championship, proving that hard work and determination can overcome doubt. Addison’s advice to younger athletes is: “Always put more effort into what you’re expected to do—it will always pay off.” One of her favorite high school memories is reaching the sectional finals three times in field hockey and sharing those experiences with her teammates. She would like to thank her parents for always supporting her and encouraging her to chase her dreams. After graduation, Addison plans to attend Roberts Wesleyan University to study pre-veterinary biology and continue her athletic career playing field hockey.

Congratulations to Isaac Bogacz and Addison Shantal, our February Athletes of the Month! Your dedication, leadership, and commitment to excellence have made a lasting impact on MECS athletics, and we are proud to celebrate your accomplishments.
