Emerald 'Āina Hula Dancers performed today at The Landings of Swansboro Assisted Living and Memory Care facility. We appreciate you all having us and hope we brought some smiles to the residents and staff this afternoon.

Some of our keiki came out for their first public performance! They did great with us for a few hulas and on their own! Looking forward to more with them this year!

These keiki are under the direction of Ms. Darlene in our group with Havelock Keiki Hula (PS she also made their pa'u hula skirts!)

Question time, what plant is this? This plant is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands.

We actually have members in the same plant family in the Carolinas. The family name is also a town in South Carolina.

Look at those beauties! Each is unique in shape, size, and sounds so different.

And yes, sometimes you improvise with a jug...it works just the same and adds a different tone into the mix.

Usually in the spring, I offer Kahi Loa Training, so I'll be announcing dates soon in the Morehead City area!

I don't talk about Kahi Loa near enough, although I've been a practitioner of it long before I was a hula dancer. Over the next few weeks, I'll be sharing more about this modality. I do offer private sessions in Jacksonville & in Morehead City, if you are interested message me or visit https://redheadedhulagirl.com/kahi-loa-sessions to learn more.

What is it?

Kahi Loa is a type of healing art practice with roots in the Hawaiian Islands (Kauai). As within the Hawaiian language, words have many meanings. Kahi Loa may be translated to mean "oneness through sacred energy" or "moving or flowing of life/energy". Kahi Loa is very fluid.

It is an ancient form of vibrational energy movement, not to be confused with LomiLomi. Kahi Loa is done fully clothed, without the use of oils, & is a wonderful relaxing, energizing, & gentle energy modality. Kahi Loa is simple to learn, easy & fun to do, & powerfully filled with love. With roots in Polynesia, it was developed into a healing system by Serge Kahili King, Ph.D. in the 1980s. I first learned it in 2006 & in 2009 completed my training with Dale & Jeanne Stacy in Greensboro. I taught my first class around 2012.

Kahi Loa helps to bring the body & spirit into alignment through the assistance of the elements & kingdoms of the natural world.

These sessions are known to bring about deep relaxation to re-set the body-mind-spirit of the receiver & allows the body to do what it knows to do.

Kahi Loa is not as common as Reiki or other modalities you may have heard about. However, once you have a session or take a class you quickly see the benefits & that it brings in a lot of love & peace into one's energy field. You may have heard of Huna or Ho'oponopono as those are more prevalent today with books available & other resources. Kahi Loa is taught within Huna practices & by very few instructors around the world. Kahi Loa is something that is still passed on mostly in an oral tradition.

This month the intermediate ladies will be learning their first hula with an implement together - the ipu (top left image). The ipu is a hollowed-out gourd drum. It is not only an instrument/implement used in Hula Kahiko (traditional/ancient hula); it also has use in daily life. It was used to store food and used in ceremony. The ladies will be learning how to use it while in noho (seated) to begin with.

Some of the intermediate ladies that attended the workshop a few months ago with Kumu Hula Kau`i Dalire-Boyd learned a hula with the pu'ili (bamboo sticks bottom right image). These can be fun and to use both you really need coordination!

Another implement used is the 'uli 'uli (feathered gourd rattles). The feathers are often seen in yellow and red combinations, natural brown, or dyed in various colors.

My personal lesson learned with the 'uli 'uli: my dog discovered the joys of the feathers and I came home one day with red feathers and red coloring all over my carpet! (Luckily the red came out easily.) Now they stay covered in small pouches within a zipped bag deep in my closet!
