✨ Worship Wednesday ✨
📖 “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”
- Philippians 2:3–4
It is easy to become focused on ourselves.
Our goals. Our responsibilities. Our schedules. Our challenges. What we are trying to accomplish and what we hope comes next.
There is nothing wrong with working hard or pursuing the things God has placed before us. But Philippians 2 reminds us that following Christ also requires us to look beyond ourselves.
Paul calls us to humility.
Not the kind of humility that means thinking less of ourselves, but the kind that makes room to genuinely value other people.
To notice when someone needs encouragement.
To listen when someone is struggling.
To celebrate someone else’s success without comparing it to our own.
To serve when there is nothing in it for us.
And sometimes simply to slow down long enough to ask how someone else is doing.
That can be difficult in a world that constantly encourages us to measure ourselves against everyone around us.
Competition can make that especially challenging.
Racing naturally gives us goals to pursue and people to compete against, but our faith reminds us that the person lined up beside us is still someone we are called to respect, encourage, and care about long after the checkered flag falls.
That lesson extends into every part of life.
Humility changes the way we compete, the way we work, the way we lead, the way we parent, the way we treat our friends, and even the way we respond when someone else receives the recognition we hoped for.
Jesus continually modeled this kind of life.
He served.
He listened.
He noticed people others overlooked.
And ultimately, He placed the needs of others ahead of His own.
Philippians 2 challenges us to ask whether our faith is shaping us in that same direction.
We may not always be able to solve someone else’s problem, but we can notice them.
We can encourage them.
We can pray for them.
We can choose kindness over comparison and humility over recognition.
Sometimes one of the clearest ways we can show the love of Christ is simply by caring enough to look beyond ourselves.
💭 This week, we invite you to join us in reflecting:
• Am I genuinely celebrating and encouraging the people around me, or am I too often comparing their success to my own?
• Where can I be more intentional about noticing and serving someone else instead of focusing only on what I need or want?
• How does my faith call me to demonstrate greater humility, kindness, and consideration in the relationships God has placed in my life?
🙏 We invite you to join us in this week’s prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the people You place around us each day. Help us resist selfishness, comparison, and the desire for recognition, and teach us instead to walk with humility. Give us eyes to notice when someone needs encouragement, hearts willing to serve without expecting anything in return, and the ability to genuinely celebrate the blessings You give to others. Help our faith be visible not only in what we say, but in the way we treat people. Teach us to follow the example of Jesus and to love others with humility, compassion, and grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
