With Mother’s Day approaching, we thought we would share some fun facts about quail mothers!​

Did you know:​

1. Bobwhite hens will sometimes nest two to three times within a single nesting season to increase the likelihood of a successful brood, even if the first nest survived.​

2. Hens will sometimes practice “multiple-brooding”, which involves laying a clutch for a male bobwhite to incubate as well as one for herself.​

3. Contrary to the belief that many bird species mate for life, bobwhite hens have been found to exhibit polyandrous behavior; some female bobwhites will mate with multiple males within a single nesting attempt.

April marks the beginning of nesting season for Northern bobwhites! While the life of a quail is never easy, this time of year can be especially unforgiving. Adequate vegetation is needed if broods are to survive the summer’s challenges. Nesting cover should include grasses 12-18” tall and about the diameter of a basketball, and brooding cover should have adequate overhead protection with space for chicks to roam below. Planning for plants that provide nesting and brooding cover can help give bobwhites and their chicks a better chance at making it through the season!
