I had a conversation with a client recently that really stuck with meโฆ
During show season, we get SO focused on the next show.
And honestly,
But sometimes we get so busy polishing what we already have that we forget to step back and ask ourselves:
Thatโs where the "off season" comes in.
It isn't just about keeping your horse legged up until spring. It's about building a better horse AND rider than you had last season.
This is when we can slow down and work on the things that might not pay off next weekend but could completely change where you are six months from now.
Build more body control.
Strengthen the foundation.
Fix the holes you've been working around.
Teach a new maneuver.
Improve your feel and timing.
Take extra lessons.
Step outside your comfort zone.
Add another tool to the toolbox.
Because every new button, every stronger foundation, and every little bit of confidence you build gives you more options with your horse.
And those options are what eventually allow you to branch out, try different events, tackle harder maneuvers, and become a more well-rounded horseman.
Does that mean you can't take a break?
Absolutely not.
Take the break. Give your horse some downtime. Give yourself some downtime. Enjoy the holidays. Reset.
You don't need to ride seven days a week. You don't need to train like you're showing tomorrow.
You just need to keep showing up.
Keep taking the lessons.
Keep asking questions.
Keep riding with intention.
Keep adding to the toolbox.
Keep riding as much as you can.
Because when everyone starts thinking about show season again next spring, you don't want to spend your first few months trying to get back to where you were.
You want to be standing there with more horse, more feel, more confidence, and more tools than you finished with.
๐ค and if you feel like you get stuck and arent sure what to do or where to begin, thats where we can help.
With access to an indoor arena, mechanical flag, cattle, individualized training, and lessons, the winter months give us the opportunity to really dig into the areas that will make a difference in your horse's performance and your growth as a rider.
Whether you're looking to strengthen your foundation, advance your ranch versatility and cattle work, prepare a young horse, or simply become a more confident and capable rider, there's no reason to put your progress on hold just because show season is over.
Winter training and lesson spots are available, and spring training is already being scheduled and filled!
If you have goals for next year, now is the time to get a plan in place. Let's put in the work now so you can hit the ground running when the next season rolls around.
Show season is when we polish the pieces. Off season is when we build new ones.
Keep your head down.
Do the work.
And give yourself something new to bring to the pen next year.
