Many years ago the rokushakubo was introduced by Soke Hatsumi as part of the study of the schools of the Bujinkan. Shaku is a unit of measurement that is just shy of 1 foot. It is approximatley 11 15/16". This is where the 6 ft is roughly derived from. It was then revealed that one of the denshos recommended the length of the bo be approximately 1 shaku over the height of the warrior. Soke pointed out that when you look at very old authentic armor it looks rather small comparatively to the size of people's frames of today. Historically the average height of the Japanese people during Japan's older history indicates an average height just over 5 foot. Add a shaku to that and you get approximately 6'. Even so height more than likely varied from person to person back then as it does now. The average height here in the US these days is approximately in the 6' range. Some are taller while others are shorter. So there is no perfect length for the bo and standards tend to be chosen based on what is conveniently close to what is required. As a result, for many years we made our bos at the bukio 6 1/2' in order to accommodate a slightly taller frame. I myself am just shy of 6' by a couple of inches. I used the 6 1/2' bo for a number of years. Its extra length is nice at times and a hindrance at others. I have since gone back to a 6' length bo and have enjoyed the less length when it comes to maneuvering the tool. In the end, it is all relative and it will come down to user preference. One suggestion is too start out with the 6 1/2' length and if it is not comfortable then cut it down to your preferred length. If you are at that 5' height then maybe you already know that 6 1/2' is too long. If you request that your bo be cut down, we can accommodate you. Enjoy your training and keep going! Gambatte!!!

Hanbojutsu is the study of the "half staff" as it is literally translated. Although the hanbo is a lot of times referred to as a "walking" stick, it was also the right length to simulate fighting with one of the broken ends of a one of the longer weapons whether a bo, jo, yari, or naginata. This was one of the reasons we chose to make our hanbo the same diameter as our bo and yari. The transition would then be seamless. On occasion we will carry both yari and hanbo together and have a sword strike in such a way to drop the yari while retaining the hanbo simulating a broken weapon. We then continue the fight with the hanbo against the sword so practitioners do not hesitate. They learn to adapt and flow on in the fight. This teaches one to adapt and keep moving! Gambatte!!!

A little history on the bokken in general....

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bokken

A bokken (木剣, bok(u), "wood", and ken, "sword") (or a bokutō 木刀, as they are instead called in Japan) is a Japanese wooden sword used for training. It is usually the size and shape of a katana, but is sometimes shaped like other swords, such as the wakizashi and tantō. Some ornamental bokken are dec…

The Japanese Yari (Spear) is a simple weapon yet elegant and full of potential for one who knows how to wield it. The most common configuration is the straight (Su-Yari) tri-flat pointed (Sankaku yari) version that results in a triangular cross section which provides bending strength in all directions when it is used to pierce a target. This made it extremely effective in penetrating through armor resulting in a nasty puncture wound that would not be easy to mend. The tail end of the yari is fitted with a metal butt end (ishizuki) which was used to protect the end of the wooden shaft when stood on the ground. This would help keep dirt and moisture out of the end of the wooden shaft causing swelling and degradation. The butt end could also be used to strike and also provided a counterbalance to the affixed pointed end. it is an extremely interesting tool to study!
