🌊 Bic’s River Report

The West Branch is currently around 4.2 feet at Lewisburg and should drop to approximately 3.3 feet by the weekend. The weather looks great, and we have a GREEN PADDLE REPORT. 🟢

The silly River Report videos will be back. But this week, we wanted to pause and acknowledge the catastrophic flooding along the northern Nepal and Tibet border.

At one point, the river system there rose nearly 30 feet in just 30 minutes. For perspective, if the West Branch rose 30 feet from its current level, it would reach approximately 34.2 feet, which was the Hurricane Agnes flood stage. Agnes reached that level after days of rain. Imagine the same rise happening in half an hour.

The map included with this post shows the approximate areas of Lewisburg that would be flooded at a 34-foot river stage, like during the 1972 Agnes flood.

Of course, the situations are not directly comparable. Our river valley is much wider, our banks are less densely developed, and floodplain regulations restrict construction in the most vulnerable areas. But the comparison helps us comprehend the speed and magnitude of what occurred.

So, while we look forward to a beautiful weekend on our river, we also mourn with those who mourn and pray for the people who remain missing and everyone who has lost someone they love.

☀️ Beautiful sunny day on the West Branch!

Bic’s has plenty of availability today, but today’s conditions call for a 🟡 YELLOW PADDLE REPORT.

The river is running above 5 feet, so while it can still be a great day to paddle, please use some extra caution:

* 🦺 Wear your PFD at all times.
* 🛶 Make sure you’re comfortable and experienced with your kayak or paddleboard.
* 👨‍👩‍👧 If it’s your first time paddling or you’re taking young children, consider waiting for a lower-water day.
* 👥 Paddle with other people. Don’t go alone.
* 🌊 Expect stronger current and faster-moving water than during our typical summer conditions.

Beautiful weather + plenty of water can make for an awesome day on the river. Just know your abilities, respect the conditions, and make smart decisions.

🌊 It’s time for the Bic’s River Report (and a little Lewisburg and West Branch history)

The West Branch has been carrying goods and timber through the Susquehanna Valley for generations. Fortunately, river reporting has improved somewhat since the 1800s as the West Branch transitioned from a mostly commercial transportation resource to a recreational resource.

So we broke out the formal attire, checked the conditions, and have your latest Bic’s River Report ready for the weekend.

The river is looking great for paddling, and there’s still plenty of summer left to enjoy it!
