Growing up, I always wanted to be the action hero who could do amazing things with her body.
Unfortunately, life doesn’t always give us what we want, when we want it.
That version of me got buried for a long time, but deciding to prioritize my fitness in my 30s reopened the door.
At 50, I’m doing things I never thought I’d get to do again. Things that once felt reserved for other people: the strong, the disciplined, the experienced. Now I am one of those people and I credit most of this to a few training priorities that have carried over really well for me in real life:
1. Relative strength and calisthenics
Not just strength, but strength relative to my own body weight.
Being able to pull, push, climb, hang, balance, get up off the ground, and control my body has made everything feel more accessible. Whether hiking, climbing, trying new sports, or everyday tasks, relative strength creates freedom and reduces injury risk. The stronger I became, the less fragile I felt.
2. Core control
People hear “core” and think abs.
Abs are great, but a strong, responsive core improves balance, coordination, stability, and body awareness. It helps me move efficiently and trust my body in unfamiliar situations.
3. Being comfortable with discomfort
This may be the most important one.
Training taught me that discomfort isn’t always the enemy. Growth often lives on the other side of what intimidates you. And that lesson transfers everywhere: trying new things at 50, traveling alone, starting over, learning skills, putting yourself out there.
The willingness to be uncomfortable is often what separates the life we imagine from the life we actually live.
Every woman deserves the freedom that comes from trusting her body, and it’s never too late to earn it!
And a huge shoutout to
The coaches were fantastic, the vibe was supportive and fun, and I felt challenged and empowered from the moment I arrived. If I could give them 10/5 stars, I would. Highly recommend if you’re local to MA!
