The "Swim for Jenny" memorial fund was established to honor Jenny Hong Nguyen, who tragically lost her life in April of 2011 in a drowning accident. She was smart, energetic, beautiful and blessed with a loving family. Sadly, Jenny did not know how to swim. Jenny was loved by so many at Keys Gate Charter School, where she almost completed the sixth grade as an honor roll student, in the gifted pro

gram. Born in Atlanta, GA, twelve year old Jenny was a longtime resident of Homestead, FL. When others would ask how she was, her friends' responses were never just "she's fine" or "she's okay" - the reply would always be "Jenny's Awesome!" In April 2011, she & her sixth grade class were all excited to be attending their first "boy/girl" party. Tragically, that would be the last day that Jenny would be with her friends & family. On Saturday, April 16th, 2011, Jenny went into water that was too deep for her limited swimming ability and was not able to make it out on her own. Swimming is an important life skill that every child should learn. The "Swim for Jenny" goal is simple and straightforward: to teach every child in South Florida how to swim. The YMCA of South Florida offers swimming lessons year-round. Unfortunately, most people don't see the hazards of a pool, beach, lake or canal. When these hazards are ignored or not recognized, users (particularly children) are at great risk of having tragic accidents. Help us teach a child to swim. Sponsorship information

Summer is here and we need to be reminded to be vigilant with our kids, in and around water. Stay safe and enjoy the summer

I used to read stories about near-drownings every summer and think, "I'm so glad that didn't happen to me." Then it did.
