You eat well. You lift weights. You hit your protein. You take care of yourself.
So why are you still waking up at 3 a.m., craving things you normally wouldn’t, feeling more impatient, struggling with your stomach, or wondering why you’re just not recovering the way you used to?
Have you thought about stress?
And I don’t just mean having a stressful day.
I mean the kind of stress that keeps your body in a constant state of “go.” The kind you may have gotten very good at living with because you’re busy, capable, and used to handling a lot.
Your body still feels it and it’s holding you back.
Stress can affect your sleep, digestion, blood pressure, immune system, concentration, appetite and even how well you recover from your workouts.
And in midlife, when hormones and sleep may already be shifting, that extra load can feel even heavier.
This is something I want women to understand because you can be doing so many things right and still feel like something is off.
It doesn’t necessarily mean you need to exercise more, eat less, or try harder.
Sometimes what your body needs is more recovery. Self care is vital in reducing that chronic stress.
Protect your sleep. Keep lifting. Eat enough protein and enough food. Get outside and walk. Slow down your breathing. Spend time with people who make you feel good. And ask for support when you need it. Journaling, breath work and yoga are also excellent ways to help your nervous system recover.
You’re never going to eliminate stress completely. None of us will.
The goal is to give your body the tools to come back down after the stress has passed.
