STORY:
“This year was a little different season for me due to my daughter being born a couple of weeks before the Michigan opener, so I got a tag that started in May. The first sit was a week day, north Michigan, very short window to hunt between business meetings, and called in 6 Jake’s before having to drive 3 hours back home. Waiting until the very last weekend I tagged along with Gary Berger to scout a new property he got access to about an hour away in hopes of roosting a bird. Luckily his owl hoot struck one up just before dark. The gobble sounded like something neither of us have heard out of a wild turkey, but figured it was worth a go. Easiest description would be a mix between a jake, tom, and a rolling tongue. I was convinced there were at least 2 different Tom’s and jake at that roost 🤷🏻♂️ We came back before sun up, got setup on a wood line, decided to use a popup, tom started gobbling about 10 minutes before shooting light. Tom double gobbled then must have pitched down somewhere in the woods behind us, thought I heard him drum, then he entered the field solo in full strut a few seconds later. He put on a show while approaching the decoys and by 5:43am we were slapping hands in disbelief that the season was done before the first breakfast spot was open. I’m very grateful for this bird (largest to date) and to all involved that made my spring season a success! 🙏🏻 Thank you!”
