Shasta got to have a little fun on the farm recently when Erik put some meat on our table.
Food for both us and our canines plus a fun short track for old lady Shasta. She may be going blind and run into a few trees while tracking now, but there’s nothing wrong with her nose!

For your convenience.
It is going to be a rare occasion that we are able to come out ourselves for tracks this season, unfortunately, so here is the trackers list for other trackers in the area.
Remember you can also go on to the United Blood Trackers website under the “find a tracker” and look for a tracking team in your area.

In preparation for this upcoming tracking season I am sad to report that until further notice we will not be able to track for the foreseeable future.
As some may know my health has been in the way of working tracks for the last few seasons and now to add to things Shasta is going blind so it will not be safe for her to track again even if I can get my health to cooperate someday.
If it ever happens again that we are able to be a tracking team again it would have to be with a new dog, sadly the type of blindness Shasta has that is currently effecting her night vision and her perseption of movement and depth, is expected to slowly worsen. There is not a known cure.
On the brighter side she is happy in her retirement and still enjoying life at 9 years old, fishing in her back pond. Her blindness is not painful for her.

Finally a track and health issues lined up just right timing to be able to get out and track this one for one of my brothers. Was fun to get out tracking on the farm!

With the beginning of season underway we, unfortunately, need to put out a notice or disclaimer of sorts to those considering calling us for game recovery.
My (Annastasia) health is still in a rather deteriorated state (due to brain injury, Lyme and possible CTE), so as much as we love tracking (it is my favorite thing to do), we advise that for the best chance for recovery, attempt to call another tracker out instead of us.
If you do choose to call us please understand there are many complications that could force us to have to abandon the track even if the trail is still good and if we were even able to make it out to you.
My tracking dog is also my multipurpose service dog, one of her tasks in that is medical alerts to an oncoming non-epileptic seizure, and as driven as she is to track she will stop and refuse to track if she gives an alert and the medical episode is coming within 10-15 minutes. If that happens the track will be called and we will need to be done immediately.
For the hunter’s and the animal’s sake we feel obligated to notify anyone calling us for a track ahead of time to give the option of calling a different tracker.
If you do choose to go with us as your tracking team we will, as always, do our best to recover your game. Also, as always, we do not charge a tracking fee, we do ask if you are able to cover our fuel that’d be great but if not it does not hold bearing on our decision to come track for you. We still love to track despite the difficulties to it for us now, so we appreciate the opportunity to run any tracks we are able and to be a part in assisting with the recovery of your animal.

Off season work.... not your typical off season job for a tracking dog but it does keep her nose sharp.... We are hoping to be able to get back in the woods (and swamps it seems more often than not) this years tracking season but we will just have to see how things play out.

We were happy to be able to take 2 tracks this past week. We have been unable to take many (almost all) tracking calls we are having come in this year due to my medical episodes. We are trying to take a few now as we are able. Please understand we cannot take many yet. Also any we do take we first let the hunter know we may need to stop mid-track, that way the hunter can decide if they would like to get another team out instead, before we attempt it.
Unfortunately the first track we took we had to call as our tracking dog is also my service dog and switched from her tracking job to her tasks for me (as she will do). But we were at least able to further the track for the hunter and get him a smaller area to search for the buck in.
The second one we took was a 24 hour old liver in / intestines out easy track for Shasta. 0.7 miles is all. 37 minutes to track. Nice to have an easier fun one sometimes.

This is an unfortunate notice; due to handler health issues the Nevins tracking team will not be able to help with recoveries this season (2021). For your convenience (and in our absence) here is an updated trackers list for the Michigan Deer Tracking Network.
Stay safe and have fun out there! We hope to be back in action next season.

If anyone is looking for a gear vest for tracking or hunting. I purchased this vest 1/2 way through this tracking season and I loved it. It works great, is customizable to have only what gear you want where you want it, and it was not cumbersome. Goes through the brush nicely. Was on hands and knees through some thick stuff on several occasions (as the dog handler I have to go where the dog goes and that can be interesting) and it did not get hung up.

Blaze orange molle tactical style weight bearing vests and pouches, along with other great hunting products and accessories.
