Clear water. Warm conditions. Almost peaceful.

At the surface, Dragon Hole looks like another beautiful blue opening in the sea.

But around 330 feet down, the environment changes completely.

Oxygen falls to essentially zero, ordinary marine life disappears, and robotic probes descend into a silent dead zone stretching toward nearly 1,000 feet.

Was the Maldives dive already in trouble before the divers entered the cave?

Reports have suggested Nitrox 28 may have been used at depths around 50 to 60 meters. If accurate, that could have seriously reduced the safety margin.

It does not prove what caused the tragedy — but it raises an important technical question.
