✨ Coaching Professionals How to Navigate a Career Transition by Exploring Their Short- and Long-Term Goals While Providing Education About Entrepreneurial Options

Fear rarely introduces itself as fear.

More often, it sounds responsible, practical and even wise. It tells us, “This isn’t the right time,” or “I should be grateful for what I have,” or “I need to know exactly how this will work before I explore it.” Those concerns can be legitimate. There are real obligations, financial pressures and consequences to consider before making a significant change. But sometimes these reasonable thoughts become a way of avoiding any investigation beyond the structure we already know. They keep one employer, one career or one source of income responsible for our security, identity, purpose and future.

It may simply be whether you have taken the time to develop another source of support, possibility or direction before circumstances force you to do so. Which well in your life may be carrying too much?

You can be successful and still know something is missing.

That does not make you ungrateful. It may simply mean the life you built years ago no longer fits the person you have become.

You do not have to blow everything up. Exploring another possibility is education, not commitment.

Are you building the life you want, or maintaining one that once made sense?

A good job can still be a dangerous well.

Not because the company is bad, because you are unhappy, or because you should immediately leave. It can be dangerous because so much of your life depends on it continuing exactly as it is.

I have worked with people who performed well, stayed loyal and did everything they believed they were supposed to do. Then the company changed direction, eliminated a position or rewrote the rules. They had done nothing wrong, but their income, identity, benefits, confidence and sense of security were all drawing from the same source.

That is the idea behind a book I have been working on called The Village With One Well. The problem is not necessarily the well. The problem is believing it is the only one. What parts of your life would be affected if your primary well changed tomorrow?

A lot of people tell me they want more freedom.

That word sounds clear until we begin talking about what it would actually mean in their lives. For one person, freedom means controlling the calendar instead of having the calendar control them. For someone else, it means being able to travel without asking permission, choosing the people they work with, or creating something meaningful for their children.

It might be simpler than that. Maybe freedom is waking up on an ordinary Tuesday and having more say over what happens next.

Those are very different destinations, which is why “I want more freedom” isn’t quite enough to guide a decision. Until you define what freedom means to you and your family, it’s difficult to know whether your current direction supports it.

You may discover that you already have more freedom than you realized. You may decide that a few thoughtful adjustments would be enough. Or you may recognize that the life you want requires you to begin exploring other roads. Before you chase freedom, define it.

What would actually be different about your ordinary Tuesday?

What is Wealth?

Yesterday I met with a client who has been with the same company for 25 years, and from my perspective, it looked like he had it made. Great career. Great income. A huge network.

We really didn't spend much time talking about everything he'd accomplished. Instead, our conversation centered around a different question. Is the career path you're on today going to get you to where you ultimately want to go? As we talked, it became clear that what motivates him today is different than it was 25 years ago. Honestly, I have conversations like this all the time.

I think it's important to appreciate the vehicle that's gotten you this far. But every once in a while, it's worth asking whether it's still the right make and model for the future you.

Something I've Noticed...

07/27/2026

Something I've noticed about success.

When we're younger, success often looks like promotions, titles, raises, and climbing the ladder.

The conversations I have today sound very different.

People still care about making a good living, but they're asking bigger questions. Do I enjoy what I'm doing? Do I have enough freedom? Am I spending my time the way I want to? What do I want the next chapter of my life to look like?

It's interesting how the way we keep score changes over time.

Maybe success doesn't really change. Maybe we just become more intentional about what success means to us.
