If you've been to Mullen Park recently, you've already seen β€” and probably used β€” many of the improvements.

That's because Mullen Park wasn't transformed overnight.

The project came together piece by piece.

🌳 New trees and expanded shade
πŸ’¦ Splash pad improvements
πŸ› Playground improvements
πŸ“š StoryWalk features
🚻 Restroom improvements
🏑 Pavilion improvements
πŸ’§ Irrigation improvements
🌿 Landscaping and beautification

Some pieces have been serving families while work continued on others.

The Sept. 22 ribbon cutting isn't about opening a park that has been closed. It's about celebrating the completion of the larger vision and recognizing everyone who helped make it possible.

One week to go.

Long before today's splash pad, playground and StoryWalk, the name Mullen was already connected to McAlester's history.

William P. Mullen was a local businessman and owner of the Mullen Coal Company during an era when coal helped shape the economy, neighborhoods and identity of the McAlester area.

Today, William P. Mullen Park carries that name into a very different chapter of McAlester's story β€” one centered on recreation, families and community.

On Sept. 22, we'll celebrate the newest chapter.

On September 11, we pause as a nation to remember the lives lost, the courage shown by first responders and the sacrifices made in service to others.

Here in McAlester, the Heroes Memorial at Will Rogers Park provides a place to reflect on that spirit of service and sacrifice while honoring local heroes who gave their lives serving our country and community.

As we observe Patriot Day, we invite you to take a moment to remember those lost on September 11, 2001, and to honor the fallen McAlester heroes whose names and stories are preserved at the memorial.

We will never forget.

After a few schedule changes, we're ready to make it official.

Join us at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22 at Mullen Park as we celebrate the completion of one of McAlester's largest recent neighborhood park improvement projects.

The approximately $650,000 transformation brought together new and improved amenities, more shade, new trees, the StoryWalk and partnerships from across the community.

We'll celebrate by planting a final tree, unveiling the final StoryWalk piece and cutting the ribbon on the completed project.

🀝 Projects like this take a community.

The transformation of Mullen Park has brought together City employees, community organizations, volunteers and partners with a shared goal: creating a better place for McAlester families.

From major park improvements to the β€œShade and Story” enhancements featuring native trees, irrigation and Story Walk features, a lot of work has gone into bringing the project to this point.

On Sept. 22, we get to celebrate everyone who helped make it possible.

Every playground, bench, tree, trail, ballfield and splash pad represents an investment in our community.

When equipment is damaged or vandalized, Parks crews spend valuable time making repairs instead of completing new improvements or routine maintenance throughout the park system.

Treating park amenities with care helps us make the most of every taxpayer dollar.

🐾 Today is National Dog Day, and we’re celebrating the pups who make our parks a little more fun!

Central Bark Dog Park gives dogs a place to run and play with separate fenced areas for large and small dogs, water, covered pavilions, waste stations and more.

We also had a little help showing you around from Indy! 🐢

Take a look around Central Bark in our latest video β€” and remember to help keep the park enjoyable for everyone by following the posted rules and cleaning up after your pup.

🌱 50 new reasons to enjoy the shade at Mullen Park.

One of the highlights of the park transformation is β€œShade and Story: Transforming Mullen Park,” which adds another layer to the improvements already underway.

The project features:

🌳 50 Oklahoma native trees
πŸ’§ Irrigation improvements
πŸ“š Story Walk features
🀝 Volunteer and community partnerships

As those trees grow, they'll provide more shade and help create a greener, more inviting park for generations of McAlester families.

And there’s still one final tree to plant.

Join us Sept. 22 as we celebrate the transformation and symbolically complete the project during β€œThe Final Piece” Ribbon Cutting & Dedication.
