UPDATE: 1:15 p.m. June 23, 2026

Due to continued rainfall and additional storms moving into the area from the northwest, both Chadick Pool and Jeff Lee Pool will remain closed for the remainder of the day.

The 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. swim lessons scheduled for today have been postponed and will be made up on Friday.

Senior Aerobics has also been canceled for today.

The safety of our patrons and staff remains our top priority. We appreciate your understanding and encourage everyone to stay weather aware as conditions continue to change throughout the day.

🌧️ WEATHER UPDATE – JUNE 23, 2026 🌧️

Due to ongoing rain and weather conditions:

🏊 The 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. swim lessons scheduled for today have been postponed and will be made up on Friday.

🏊 Chadick Pool is closing due to rain. Staff will reassess conditions at 12:30 p.m. for a possible reopening at 1 p.m.

🏊 Staff will also evaluate conditions at 12:30 p.m. to determine whether Jeff Lee Pool will open as scheduled at 1 p.m.

💪 Senior Aerobics has been canceled for today.

🌳 ICYMI: The Final Piece Ribbon Cutting & Dedication Has Been Postponed

Due to the potential for inclement weather, the City of McAlester has postponed “The Final Piece” Ribbon Cutting & Dedication at Mullen Park” to:

📅 Tuesday, July 21, 2026
🕚 11 a.m.
📍 Mullen Park

While the event date has changed, the reason for the celebration remains the same.

The Mullen Park improvement project included:

💦 Splash pad improvements
🏡 Pavilion upgrades
🚻 Restroom improvements
🌳 Expanded shade areas
🌱 50 Oklahoma native trees
💧 Irrigation improvements
📚 Story Walk features
🤝 Volunteer and community partnerships

The rescheduled event will still include:

✂️ Ribbon cutting
🌳 Symbolic final tree planting
🧩 Installation of “The Final Piece”
📸 Community celebration and photos

Thank you for your understanding. We look forward to celebrating this milestone with the community on July 21.

With unfavorable weather conditions in the forecast, the City of McAlester has postponed the Mullen Park Ribbon Cutting and Dedication Ceremony.

The event, originally scheduled for June 23, has been rescheduled for Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at 11 a.m.

This project has transformed Mullen Park with new amenities, additional shade, improved accessibility, and the planting of dozens of native trees. We look forward to gathering with our community next month to celebrate the completion of "The Final Piece."

⚠️ Weather Update ⚠️

Due to weather conditions, the Chadick Park Wading Pool is closed until at least 1 p.m. today, Friday, June 19, 2026.

Parks staff will assess weather conditions at 12:30 p.m. and determine whether the Chadick Park Wading Pool will reopen and whether Jeff Lee Pool will open as scheduled.

Senior swim is also cancelled today.

Thank you to everyone who follows, likes, shares, comments, and helps support McAlester Parks & Recreation. Every interaction helps more people stay connected to our parks, pools, splash pads, recreation programs, community events, and improvement projects happening across McAlester.

This milestone is especially meaningful as we continue our Grow to 4K campaign leading up to June 23, when the community will gather for “The Final Piece” Ribbon Cutting & Dedication at Mullen Park.

The event will celebrate the completion of a major improvement project that transformed Mullen Park through:

🏡 Pavilion upgrades
🚻 Restroom improvements
🌳 Expanded shade areas

📚🌳 Something special is growing at Mullen Park.

The new StoryWalk® experience is now installed as part of the “Shade and Story: Transforming Mullen Park” project — a collaborative effort designed to combine literacy, outdoor recreation, shade expansion, and community engagement for local families.

This multi-phase project included:
💧 Splash pad improvements
📚 Installation of the StoryWalk®
🌳 Planting 50 Oklahoma native trees
💦 Irrigation improvements
🤝 Volunteer support and community partnerships

The project was made possible through funding from the Urban and Community Forestry Grant, a program of Oklahoma Forestry Services in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service.

A huge thank you to the McAlester Community Tree Board, McAlester Parks Department crews, volunteers, and community partners who helped bring this project to life.

The first featured StoryWalk® book is Snow in the Jungle / Nieve en la Jungla by Ariane Hofmann-Maniyar, generously provided by Child’s Play International. Stay tuned for more on the next story to be featured!
