The Road to Fargo with USA Wrestling Ohio

The Journey Home
Every journey eventually turns toward home.

As our Team Ohio bus made its way back toward Ohio, the mood was noticeably different than it had been just a few days earlier.

The anticipation that filled the ride to Fargo had been replaced with laughter, reflection, and a collective sense of gratitude. There was exhaustion, of course, but there was also perspective.
The wrestling was over.
The learning was just beginning.

On Saturday night, our athletes experienced one final lesson before leaving North Dakota. The Fargodome transformed from thirty competition mats spread across the arena floor into a championship stage illuminated by just two mats under the lights. Thousands of fans watched as Ohio's Kaylee Vera and Mackenzie Carder captured national championships while Team Ohio filled the arena with cheers.
We wanted our athletes to witness that moment because if you want to become the best, you first have to see what that looks like.
Earlier in the day, Cami Leng finished seventh in the Junior Division, earning All-American honors for the second consecutive year.

While we're incredibly proud of that accomplishment, this week wasn't defined by one wrestler or one result.
Avery Riley and Kirra Streng each proved they belong on the national stage, finishing just a few matches shy of All-American status after remarkable tournaments.
Cara Leng closed the final chapter of her Fargo career with the same courage and determination that has always defined her.
Layla Van Cura, a rising eighth grader, gained experience that will help shape the future of our program for years to come.

What makes this week special isn't simply the results.
It's the confidence earned through preparation.
The friendships built across Team Ohio.
The realization that extraordinary goals are possible through extraordinary commitment.

Thank you to our families, Team Ohio coaches, volunteers, athletic trainer Ashley Hardbarger, and everyone who supported these athletes throughout their journey.

One of my favorite definitions of a coach comes from the original meaning of the word—a coach was once a carriage that helped someone important travel from where they are to where they want to be.

This week reminded me that coaching has never simply been about wrestling.
It has always been about helping incredible young people discover who they're capable of becoming.
Thank you for following The Road to Fargo.
The road may have ended.
The journey is just beginning.
❤️🤍💙

The Road to Fargo with USA Wrestling Ohio
One More Day

By Friday evening, the Fargodome looked different.
The crowds had thinned. The brackets had narrowed. Every remaining match carried the weight of an entire year's worth of preparation.

For four Marysville wrestlers, the journey came to an end.

For one, the journey earned another day.
Junior Cameron Leng guaranteed herself All-American honors Friday by winning her "blood round" match, securing a place among the nation's top eight wrestlers in her weight class. She will return Saturday to compete for her final placement.
The accomplishment came just hours after a quarterfinal loss to returning Fargo champion Me'kala James of California. Instead of letting disappointment define her day, Cameron regrouped, accepted coaching, and returned to the mat with purpose—earning a pin in just 49 seconds when everything was on the line.

The stories of Friday weren't limited to one athlete.
Avery Riley and Kirra Streng each finished the tournament with impressive 4-2 records, falling just one match short of All-American status after battling through some of the nation's deepest brackets.

Cara Leng concluded her final Fargo appearance after overcoming an injury-plagued preparation to compete on one of wrestling's biggest stages.

Layla Van Cura leaves Fargo with valuable experience that will help shape future opportunities.

One of the day's most meaningful moments came before the matches even began.

During warm-ups, the girls were greeted by a familiar face. Marysville athletic trainer Ashley Hardbarger, who volunteers her time with Team Ohio throughout the year, was working the event. Hundreds of miles from home, seeing someone who has cared for them all season brought a sense of comfort and familiarity before another demanding day of competition.
This week has never been only about wins and losses.
It has been about growth.
Today, Cami will wrestle for a place on the All-American podium, carrying with her not only the support of her family and coaches, but the pride of every Marysville teammate who helped make this journey special.
❤️🤍💙

The Road to Fargo with USA Wrestling Ohio

Finding the Rhythm

The first full day of competition at the USA Wrestling Junior & 16U National Championships challenged every athlete in different ways.

Before the wrestling even begins, Fargo has its own rhythm.

Thousands of athletes line up to have credentials scanned before entering the arena floor. Wrestlers hurry to assigned warm-up mats, coaches navigate thirty competition mats, and teammates prepare for the biggest tournament of the year.

Then the whistles begin.

By the end of Thursday, five Marysville wrestlers had taken five very different paths—but they all arrived at the same destination.

Day Two.

Cameron Leng remained undefeated with two dominant technical falls.

Avery Riley won her first two matches before falling to the No. 4 seed from Pennsylvania.

Kirra Streng battled back from a heartbreaking opening-round loss with two straight victories.

Cara Leng and Layla Van Cura also rebounded after difficult first-round losses to keep their tournaments alive.

Advancing to Friday is an accomplishment in itself. Every Marysville wrestler began the day in a 128-athlete bracket, where only eight wrestlers in each weight class will earn All-American honors by Saturday evening.

The story wasn’t just about Marysville.

Several M-POWER teammates representing schools from across central Ohio also advanced to Friday, another reminder that while winter wrestling creates rivals, the spring and summer season builds teammates.

Behind the scenes, Team Ohio coaches once again demonstrated what makes this program special. With matches happening simultaneously across thirty mats, coaches trusted one another to step into corners whenever needed, ensuring every Ohio wrestler had support.

Tomorrow, the brackets get even smaller.

The Road to Fargo continues.

The Road to Fargo with USA Wrestling Ohio Girls Teams

Settling In

After nearly sixteen hours on the road, Team Ohio has officially arrived in Fargo.

Today wasn’t about competition.

It was about settling in.

The day began with unloading buses, moving into dorms, picking up credentials, and preparing for the days ahead. For many of these athletes, it’s only the second time they’ve lived in a college dorm, the first coming just two weeks ago during Team Ohio’s Fargo preparation camp.

The heat greeted everyone immediately. Dorm rooms without air conditioning, crowded sidewalks, and water bottles that never seemed to stay full became part of the experience. No one complained. They simply adapted.

Later in the afternoon, Team Ohio gathered inside a practice facility known simply as “The Bunker.”

It was hot.

It was crowded.

It was exactly what everyone expected.

Teams from across the country shared the mats as coaches made final adjustments and athletes sharpened their focus. There was a little more tension in the air than there had been back home, but there was also confidence. Months of preparation had led to this moment.

As practice came to an end, coaches quietly shifted their attention to helping the final few athletes manage weight before tomorrow morning’s weigh-ins.

The championship has already begun.

Tomorrow, the doors of the Fargodome open, and preparation gives way to performance.

The Road to Fargo continues…

We Are Team OHIO USA Wrestling Ohio

Yesterday morning ended with laughter.
This morning felt different.

The smiles were still there, but so were the nerves. Final weight checks. Last-minute packing. Parents making sure nothing was forgotten. Hugs that lingered a little longer than usual.
The journey suddenly became real.

Today, more than 130 female wrestlers and 30 coaches from across Ohio gathered at Ohio Northern University for one final practice before beginning the trip to Fargo, North Dakota.

It didn’t take long for the energy to change.
Friends reunited after seeing one another at camps and tournaments throughout the spring. Practice partners from opposite sides of the state picked up right where they left off. For one hour, the room was filled with the excitement that comes from knowing months of preparation have led to this moment.

At 7:00 this evening, three charter buses rolled west.

The destination is Fargo.

The identity is Team Ohio.

Tonight, somewhere on the highways stretching across the Midwest, those buses carry more than wrestlers.
They carry years of work, families’ sacrifices, friendships built across the state, and the opportunity to represent Ohio on one of wrestling’s biggest stages.
Tomorrow morning, we’ll arrive in Fargo.
The Road to Fargo continues.

The Road to Fargo
One Last Practice

This morning, the Marysville wrestling room didn't feel like a team preparing for one of the biggest tournaments in the country.
It felt like home.

Before practice even began, the girls were laughing through a game of partner dodgeball. There were smiles, hugs, high-fives, and the kind of relaxed energy that only comes when you trust the work you've put in.

As coaches, that's exactly what we hoped to see.
For more than three months, these athletes have trained, traveled, competed, lifted, and challenged themselves to earn the opportunity to represent Team Ohio at the USA Wrestling Junior & 16U National Championships in Fargo, North Dakota.

This morning wasn't about squeezing in one more technique.
It was about enjoying one more practice together.
One of the things that stood out most wasn't just our Fargo qualifiers. Marysville wrestlers who aren't making the trip showed up anyway—to drill, wrestle, encourage, and help prepare their teammates.

That's what great programs do. Success is never built by the people in the spotlight alone. It's built by teammates willing to invest in one another.

Another reminder of what makes girls wrestling special was seeing athletes from different communities leading warm-ups and working together as if they'd been teammates for years.

Throughout the spring, M-POWER has become more than a club. It has become a place where girls from different schools come together with one goal—to help each other improve.

Tomorrow, we'll join more than 130 wrestlers and 30 coaches from across Ohio at Ohio Northern University for one final Team Ohio practice.
Tomorrow evening, three charter buses will begin the nearly 1,000-mile journey west.
The preparation is over.
Now they get to compete.
