Michigan On Foot

Michigan On Foot Hiking, Walking, Running, Michigan This is mostly about walking, running and hiking in Michigan using the many miles of trails throughout our magnificent state.

There's a companion blog (listed below) where I occasionally add information about trails and shares of great info I find on the internet. Feel free to post your stories.

Bridge walk in the Soo. Price is $10 for the bus back to your vehicle, and you'll need passport or equivalent to participate because it's an international bridge. No walking half way and turning around.

Poison oak is NOT in Michigan, and not a plant to worry about. There's plenty of poison ivy and poison sumac here to keep us on alert though. Stinging nettles are a barrel of fun too.

Excellent article about poison sumac.

Marquette is full of places to walk, hike, bike, mountain bike, and snowshoe or ski. Presque Isle Pathway is one network of trails that tie into other trail systems, including the NCT. The area at Hogback Mountain is very hilly and rocky. The map is marked based on difficulty and within the park the trail markers are color coded and named. I think the trails could be better labeled at intersections, since there's a lot of them, and destinations should have signs pointing you in the right direction. I didn't have cell service at lower terrains, but did once I got atop "Top of the World Lookout". I had no idea you can easily get there by car via Forestville Road. Instead I took the 6+ mile round trip trek from the parking lot on Big Bay Road. I figured going downhill via Doc Nobs would be easy, but it's an ankle eater. The photos should give you a good idea of what to expect. The trail I took uphill was called Jedi. The blue line marked multi-use on the map is an old railroad bed. I'll be coming back to explore the other trails I hadn't hiked.

Zoe at Backpacker Magazine offers up several good suggestions on how to deal with this issue, the dog backpack is genius. I'm grateful when there's no landmines on the actual trail, but we all know there's times when we have to walk the edge, like when passing another group of hikers. Pick it up, bag it up, pack it out.

I'm adding these hikers to the hall of shame. Photo of the Dead River Falls trailhead in Marquette. Their vehicles only feet away, they have decided to leave their trash and poo bags right by the fence opening instead. Other hikers must go thru the stench and cloud of flies. Don't be these people.

I have a two gallon bucket with lid in my car that I use for trash I accumulate while traveling. Sadly, I also fill an additional kitchen trash bag with the trash others leave on the trail that I pack out. Crazy how it's little effort for me to haul out their mess and later put it in a campground dumpster, yet they can't be bothered. I draw the line at packing out poo bags.

At the end of Stover Road is the east branch of the Rifle River and some public land. Slow moving water with frogs and bass, bunch of birds. Got a geocache here. I didn't walk the entire property, but others have said they've gotten about 5 miles total exploring. I was with someone who wasn't up to the challenge yesterday. Most of it is level terrain on old two-tracks. Seasonally this is hunting land. Some of the ditches look difficult to get a kayak down. The south stretch to Wigwam Bay from the maintenance shed area looked clear. One side of this ditch is private property.

A small boardwalk park just outside of Munising. A great little spot to picnic, stretch your legs, and grab some 5G's if you're camping in the no-fi zone. 100% ADA, dogs allowed on a leash only, not sure about hours.

FB lost my previous post for Pretty Lake. I'll repost the historic information at a later date.

In a nutshell this is a state forest campground in a quiet zone. There's drive to, and kayak-to/hike-in camp sites. There's a few miles of trails that are well marked. It can get wet and buggy, it was pouring rain during my visit on Memorial Day. There's fishing here as well. Not sure about hunting. ATVs/ORVs are not allowed at this SFC.

I hiked close to 11 miles on the North Country Trail thru Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. This was a beautiful hike and a highly recommended segment.

It's important to read the information at the kiosks because they'll tell you what to expect in the area, such as water sources. For much of this segment its hard to reach a water source to filter as there's no access to the beach. Since I did a short day hike, this wasn't an issue for me here, however when I spoke to thru hikers this was an important item they said I should include. There's water at the campsites near the lighthouse, but not at Masse. There's privies available for trail users at both Masse and AuSable CG sites.

I parked at the Log Slide and went east to the Masse Homesite Campsite first, then went back and walked to just beyond the lighthouse. This was a mistake, as around mile 9 the entire end of hike was uphill. On the 5 terrain rating I'd say this was a close 5, or 5. I should have parked at the Hurricane River, putting this closer to the beginning of my hike, although it would add roughly another 1.25 miles to what I have done here.

I had cell service here. Enough to take a couple important calls and send photos. I was delighted about this development, as I often hike alone and like to send a live location for safety reasons.

From the Hurricane River parking to the lighthouse it's a hard packed road. The park service does not provide transportation to the lighthouse for those who need ADA assistance. If you have a scooter that can handle going for 2+ miles, then it can be done. The rest of the trail is not ADA friendly. The Log Slide Overlook is sand, you can get a scooter to it, but not up it to look over Superior.

There's now an entry fee at PRNL. There's info at Recreation dot gov website and app. However, the app doesn't currently have day pass purchase ability offsite without the QR code, which is disappointing. There's a QR to scan on the kiosk. I have included them in this post which should work. A pass bought at the Log Slide will cover you for entry anywhere in the park (Miners Beach, Munising Falls, etc). I suggest creating an account and adding your CC info before your trip so any purchase made on site can be done quickly. While there was cell service I tend not to rely on it to be present along the Superior shore.

I'm sure by now you're wondering about the bugs. I used a high # deet spray and citronella bracelets. Skeeters were bad during my vacation in Newberry and Grand Marais, but I didn't have a problem with them biting. I only had 2 biting flies land. Zero ticks, which was surprising because the trail does have some tall growth near the trail, mostly young trees and ferns.

Saw lots of deer tracks, and small animal tracks, saw a porcupine, and found s**t most likely from a coyote. I didn't see bear, the hikers who camped at Masse didn't either. The woods were full of chipmunks.
