Returned to my alma mater, Westminster Choir College of Rider University to present my Singer’s Toolkit Workshop for Robin Massie’s voice studio! The students were incredibly talented, inquisitive, and eager to learn! I love presenting workshops!

Belt is a style. Head, Chest, Mix Voice, M1/M2, twang, etc etc etc are all limited terms trying to categorize the full range of human vocal expression. But, hey, it’s super fun to try! One thing is certain, has a stunning voice!

Kerrie Obert’s twang research is suggesting a different anatomical location of twang than we assumed, so that’s kind of fun new science!

Alright friends, what do you hear, and how would you describe it? It’s like the ice bucket challenge: the screlting edition 😂

Inside a real voice lesson. We’re choosing what key should sing this song in for his submission.

You’ll see us try a few different sections of the song in 2 keys. Our goal is to identify which key lets his voice feel more expressive, free, and allow his vocal technique to take a backseat while prioritizing storytelling.

Which one would you choose for an audition?

We’re not tied down to one printed key anymore, yayyy!

Stick around for the bonus footage of Ryan’s performance of Orpheus with at the end.

You weren’t born judging your voice.

That’s something most of us learned from teachers, training, comparing ourselves to others, or just trying to “sound good.”

But constant judging can actually limit our artistry.

Explore interrupting your judgements and instead just notice what your voice did. Observe and adjust.

Give it a try. 💛

Inside a real voice lesson. Watch as and I get her ready to play Regina George in Mean Girls Jr.

We explored 2 singing techniques as she worked on World Burn.
1. Say a snooty “hmm” and invite sound toward that space
2. Sing a little oooo before every ‘w’ sound and chew the jaw down to pop the sound up

Try these singing tips the next time you’re practicing, and be sure to let me know how it goes for you!

What does smell have to do with singing? 🤯

Scent can influence your nervous system, ease your performance anxiety, and improve your vocal coordination more than most singers realize!

Because your sense of smell connects directly to the brain’s emotional and memory centers, it can act as a priming signal that helps your brain organize movement more efficiently.

For singers, that can mean:
✨ less tension
✨ more ease
✨ clearer, more coordinated sound

This is just one way we can use sensory input to support better singing!

Follow for more tips that connect your mind + body + voice 💛

These words from my college voice professor have stayed with me for almost 20 years. Every breath is a fresh start—an opportunity to reset, release, and move forward.

If a performance isn’t going your way, if tension creeps in, if doubt takes hold—pause. Breathe. The next moment is yours to reclaim.
