On the cutting edge of pre-hospital care

Maplewood Fire-EMS expands lifesaving capabilities with whole blood program, becoming one of only a few Minnesota departments to administer transfusions in the field.

This is thanks to a partnership with Regions EMS HealthPartners.

Key facts:
-- Significant blood loss (known in emergency medicine as hemorrhaging) remains the leading cause of preventable death following a traumatic injury.

-- With this program, Maplewood Fire-EMS can begin blood transfusions at the scene, instead of waiting until the patient is at the hospital, dramatically improving their chance of survival.

-- Research shows that for every minute delay in blood resuscitation, mortality risk increases by approximately 2%.
