Colonizers didn’t just take the historic map from my wall while I was fighting corruption and eviction at Gay and Christopher Streets, where I fought to preserve the area’s block’s Romani and African-American history. They took the entire color palette and aesthetic of my life, right down to the tones of my hair and my skin.
I’ve put myself in increased danger by sharing this story, but I feel I must expose not only how modern colonization is working in New York City, but how elite university presses commodify Gypsy lore while displacing living Roma scholars.
