Self Talk:
The internal dialogue one has to interpret feelings and perceptions, and gives him or her instructions and reinforcement .

What are you telling yourself?

Is it motivating?
Is it even true?

When you talk about your health, do you use “Change Talk” or “Sustain Talk?”
Your perception is important. Saying, “I will prioritize my health someday when life calms down,” is Sustain Talk. It allows you to sustain your current health habits because we all know that life never really calms down. However, saying, “I will prioritize my health because I want the strength and endurance it takes to live my life,” is Change Talk, acknowledging a need to make changes that will improve your quality of life.

Social Physique Anxiety- A specific form of anxiety that occurs in individuals who perceive that others could be negatively evaluating their physique.*

If you experience this, some of your self-talk might include comments such as:
- I’ll start working out when I lose a little weight.
- I would work out, but I don’t have anything comfortable to wear.
- I feel self-conscious working out in front of people.
- I feel like everyone is staring at me.

I have definitely had experience with these types of thoughts. Fortunately, I have learned that these thoughts are just barriers that can be overcome, not permanent roadblocks. My number one goal as a Personal Trainer is to help people overcome health barriers and love who they are. Let’s get started!
