“Are survival swim lessons traumatizing?”

“Will my child hate the water when lessons are over?”

“My child is stubborn. What if they refuse to do the work?”

“My child has stranger danger. Are they going to hate lessons?”

“Will my child cry?”

These are all questions I’ve been asked, and they are valid questions.

Will your child cry? They might.

For many little ones, water has always meant FUN. It means splashing, playing, jumping, and being held by Mom or Dad. Then they come to survival swim lessons and suddenly they are being asked to work. They are learning new skills. They are being challenged to do things that may feel unfamiliar or difficult at first.

And sometimes kids cry when things are hard.

Sometimes they protest.

Sometimes they are unsure of me because I’m a stranger.

Sometimes they are simply mad because this isn’t the kind of pool time they had in mind!

But I get to watch something pretty incredible happen session after session. I watch children who cried and protested begin to trust themselves and their abilities. I watch fear and frustration turn into confidence. I watch the tears become smiles. And before long, many of those same kids who once didn’t want to get in the water don’t want to get OUT!

Confidence in the water is huge.

But competence in the water is even more important.

I don’t teach children that the water should be feared. I teach them that they can learn how to respond to it.

Your child doesn’t have to be fearless.
They don’t have to be easygoing.
They don’t have to love every second of learning.

They just need the opportunity to learn.

Because when it comes to water, I want your child to have more than confidence.

I want them to have the skills to survive. ❤️

Today we ended another 6 week session! Summer flew by! This last week was rainy and cold but we powered through! I am so proud of these kiddos! They all worked super hard! This was the first time I did a private session and I would absolutely go this route again! Super awesome to have a small group that all know each other!
Now for a much 2 week break before the last session of the year begins mid September!

Just because summer is almost over 😥 does not mean there isn’t accidents in the water! Drowning has no season!

Looking to start booking classes for 2027! I have one open for kalkaska starting in April! Several spots available for that class! New students and refreshers!

I am also looking for anyone wanting to open their pool for a couple weeks just for my past clients for some refreshers and possibly new students in June.

If you have a pool and it’s heated and are willing to let me use it 4 days a week for a couple hours…I can give free lessons to your child or do a rental agreement!

I am fully insured and certified.

Although David didn’t start lessons with me at 6 months old, I strongly encourage parents to start young whenever possible. 💙

David is 2.5 years old, and look at him now—swimming the entire length of the pool with a huge smile on his face! 🥹💦

Did he cry the first week? Yep.
Did he not want to get in every day at first? Yep.
But look at the confidence he has now!

He’s learning, he’s having fun, and most importantly, he’s developing skills that can help keep him safer around water.

This is why I teach survival swim. And it’s why I encourage parents to begin age-appropriate water safety lessons as early as 6 months old.

You don’t wait until your child needs the skill. You teach the skill before they need it. 💙

Starting young allows children to become comfortable and confident in the water while learning essential survival skills along the way.

Swim. Float. Roll. Find air. Get to safety. 🩵

That’s why I do what I do. And watching these little ones grow in confidence makes it all worth it! 🥰

Hi, friends. ❤️

Today I’m asking our Spires Survival Swim family to please stop and pray for a young child who experienced a non-fatal drowning today.

This precious child had to be revived and was airlifted to Grand Rapids. The parents truly thought they had lost their baby, but by God’s grace, the child was brought back and is now receiving care.

Please pray life, healing, and restoration over this little one. 🙏🏼 Pray that there is no lasting injury and that this becomes a story of a child who survived and made a full recovery.

Please also pray for the parents and family. I cannot imagine the fear and heartbreak of watching your child go through something like this. Pray for peace that surpasses understanding, comfort, strength, and hope as they wait.

As someone who teaches little ones water survival skills, this hits especially close to my heart. Every child matters. Every family matters.

Lord, we speak life over this baby. We ask You to place Your healing hands over this child, protect their brain and body, guide every doctor and nurse caring for them, and surround this family with Your peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen. ❤️🙏🏼

2 minutes. That's all it took for my son to slip out of my sight, make it to the water without me, and drown.

When water is anywhere in the area, you need to have a supervision plan.

Know who is watching the kids at all times. Designate someone as the water watcher. Don't just assume someone is watching.

Make sure whoever is watching the kids doesn't have any distractions like their phone or talking to people.

Do not distract the designated water watcher. They need their full attention on the children.

Switch water watchers frequently so that fresh eyes can always be watching the kids. A good rule is to switch when the lifeguards switch.

Always provide one-to-one supervision for non-swimmers, and always make sure you are close enough to grab them if you need to.

Never, ever leave a child in or near water alone. Not even for the time it takes to grab a towel. A young child can drown in as little as 30 seconds.

Remember: Drowning is fast and silent, and it can happen right in front of you without you seeing it. So always be watching for it.

Play time for them is work time for you.
