Far West Team Makes History at Junior Nationals
Written by Kathi Kirkeby
The Far West Team etched a new chapter in its history at the US Ski and Snowboard 2024 Cross Country Junior Nationals, held in Lake Placid, New York, the week of March 11th-16th. Considered the most prestigious national competition for U16, U18, and U20 skiers, Junior Nationals brings the top junior competitors from across the country together for a week of racing. Despite a week of ever-changing conditions—snow, rain, fog, and sunshine—the Far West Team put together its best historical performance, thanks to a combination of fantastic skiing by the athletes and meticulously prepared skis by the wax tech team.
Mammoth was well-represented by a talented group of skiers: seniors Dane Karch, Ella Walker, and Cabot Godoy; sophomore Olivia Karch; and freshman Pearl Johnson. The week was filled with highlights, including Dane Karch's impressive second-place finish in the U18 Boys' 10km Classic race. Despite challenging conditions that saw many skiers DNF, Ella Walker persevered for a well earned 83rd-place finish in the U18 girls' 10km Classic. Karch and Godoy also had a strong showing in the Sprint race, placing 12th and 17th respectively. Olivia Karch and Pearl Johnson skied hard in the U16 Women's 5km Skate race, finishing 29th and 51st, respectively. Johnson continued to battle for a respectable 46th place in the 5km Classic race, with Karch close behind in 59th. The week culminated in a spectacular performance by the Far West U18 mixed relay team, which included Dane Karch. They fought hard and skied to first place, earning the national title, capping off a truly fantastic week for all Far West skiers.
Coach Meaghan Thompson has guided the Mammoth athletes throughout their winter training in preparation for Junior Nationals. Supporting the Mammoth athletes in Lake Placid were Mike Karch, Kathi Kirkeby, and former Mammoth Nordic Head Coach Ben Higgins, who all served on the Far West staff. The Mammoth Lakes community is incredibly proud of these talented athletes for their dedication and success at the Junior National Championships.

Mammoth Nordic Teams Conquer State Championships and Gear Up for Junior Nationals!
by Kathi Kirkeby
Mammoth Middle School and Mammoth High School Nordic Ski teams skied to impressive results at the recent CNISSF State Championships, originally scheduled for March 2nd but moved to February 28th due to the impending blizzard forecast.
Mammoth Middle School Success: Although not all middle schoolers on the team were able to compete, 7th grader Reed Higerd skied to a strong 15th place finish, while 6th grader Waylon Knecht finished 68th out of 90 competitors.
Mammoth High School Dominates: Dane Karch took home the title of State Champion for the second year in a row, followed by MHS teammates Jack Leonard (7th) and Davin Wolter (13th). On the MHS girls' side, athletes Olivia Karch (11th), Ella Walker (15th), Pearl Johnson (17th), Makenna Smith (21st), and Kylie Wolter (29th) all skied great races. Both the MHS Boys and Girls teams earned third place overall in league standings.
Other local athletes that raced included Cabot Godoy (5th), Raegan Czeschin (10th), Nat Parker (15th), and Jude Higerd (31st). This concludes the school racing season for the Mammoth Nordic teams.
Junior Nationals Bound: The excitement continues as a select group of Mammoth athletes head to the prestigious Junior Nationals competition, the season finale. Dane Karch, Cabot Godoy, Olivia Karch, Pearl Johnson, and Ella Walker qualified, with Raegan Czeschin also qualifying but declining to attend. Wax Tech Extraordinaire Mike Karch and Coach Kathi Kirkeby will travel with the Far West Regional Team to Lake Placid, New York to support the local athletes. We wish the Junior Nationals qualifiers the very best as they take on the national stage!
Special thanks to ESNSA, Meaghan Thompson, John Simeon, Mike Karch, Tony Bright, and Kathi Kirkeby for dedicating their time and passion to fostering a love for the sport in Mammoth's next generation of skiers.

WINTER TRAIL GROOMING STARTING THIS WEEKEND*

*But no guarantees, as our snowcat is having a mechanical issue. We will update this post as things change!

As early as Friday February 9, but more likely Saturday February 10, Forest Service staff will be in the cat and grooming as much of the trail system as possible. When they complete grooming we will post it here on Facebook and also on our website: www.fs.usda.gov/activity/inyo/recreation/wintersports

Our snowcat can usually cover between 45-60 miles of grooming over the span of 2 days, however we cannot guarantee that it will be accomplished. There are several factors at play including snow density, debris that might be in the way, and the fact that if the snowcat continues to have maintenance issues, we might not be able to groom at all.

Please be patient with us as we ramp up operations again this year and work hard to get everything and everyone up and running.

For updates on the Shady Rest trails, follow Mammoth Lakes Trail System or visit their website: https://www.mammothtrails.org/trail-conditions/
