Roots of Strength

Roots of Strength Ready to uncover your hidden strength? Let's get to work! Classes & workshops, virtual & in person. I've grown older yet move better than I did years ago.

Since 1996, I've used the Feldenkrais Method® to discover patterns of moving and thinking that don't serve me, and find more useful choices. I've uncovered innate strength that was previously inaccessible, even unknown to me. I've brought more functional, efficient movement to the rest of my life. Working at a computer, walking, carrying groceries, dancing, playing the ukulele—whatever's needed in the movement. I've come back stronger and learned from injuries—torn meniscus, sprains, and breaks. And I'm better able to deal with adversity. To meet the challenges and confusion that life sends my way with flexibility and awareness. Come train with me if you'd like to re-connect with your own innate strength, your birthright as a human being. What you learn about yourself will surprise and delight you. Plus you'll have a whole lot of fun! I offer private lessons and group classes and workshops. In person and virtual.

*You'll Enjoy Working with Me If*

—You've been sitting way more than you used to and you want to figure how to sit smarter.

—You've noticed you're not moving with the ease you used to have and you want to change that trajectory.

—You're recovering from an injury and are motivated to move better than you did before the injury.

—You're a performer who wants to fine-tune their skill. To jump higher. To bring a fuller presence to the stage.

—You're a movement geek. You love discovering new ways to work with your physical self.

—You're stuck in some pattern of behaving or thinking that's not serving you and you're ready to bring your attention to that pattern and begin to explore other choices. SUCCESS STORIES

— Michelle Accardo, MS, ATC, LMT, CLT

“I have been practicing Feldenkrais with Angela Alston for two years. Feldenkrais helps relieve my chronic pain and works almost as a form of meditation for me. Angela is an excellent teacher.”—Karen R.

“I love her warm sense of humor. Her patience and listening are extraordinary and outstanding. No doubt there will be many lucky people who Angela will touch and enrich.”

Never heard of the "glymphatic system" before!
How cool is this?
So much yet to learn about how the human body works!

Glymphatic System: “The glymphatic system is a new frontier in human physiology, and neuroscientists are only just beginning to sift through its muck and mire.

Today, most of our knowledge of this system is based on research in mice, but it appears that the brain's recycling efforts are most active during sleep.
This seems to be when toxic products or dead cells are flushed out of the mammalian brain, riding on 'waves' of cerebrospinal fluid. These pulses of liquid appear to be pumped by some obscure plumbing network that is still coming to light.”

Listen to this revelatory interview with Dr. Rachel Zoffness about managing pain.

Every one of us humans has or will deal with pain.

PAIN. What is it? Where does it come from? And how can we hurt less? Which hurts more, a kidney stone or heartache? Why does chronic pain persist? Can we turn down our pain dials? To answer these huge questions, pain psychologist Dr. Rachel Zoffness enthusiastically explains the brain, pain and how

We *need* to spend time among living plants. We all knew this at one time. And many of us forgot, as we moved into cities and away from the rest of the natural world.

Time to remember. The nearest forest might be the park next door.

Proud to be an SCA alum and donor.

"Stepping into a forest is one of the simplest ways to remember what it feels like to breathe deeply. In a world that moves faster than our minds and bodies were built to handle, practices like forest bathing – the Japanese tradition of shinrin-yoku, or “immersing in the forest atmosphere,” invite us to slow down, tune in and let the natural world recalibrate our senses.

Forest bathing isn’t hiking. It isn’t even really exercise; it’s presence. A practice of noticing the shift of light through branches, the scent of pine or the layered chorus of birds creating a symphony. And as simple as it sounds, the science is clear: time in the forest can reduce cortisol, lower blood pressure, improve mood and even strengthen your immune system." — Student Conservation Association

Forest bathing: Learn how spending time in nature lowers stress and why protecting public lands matters for our health.

Sometimes I learn something life-changing that I must share. This is one of those times. What I learned: we humans need to breathe through our noses.

Breathe through your nose. Whatever you're doing. Awake or asleep.
