Coaching isnāt about making athletes happy all the time. And itās definitely not about creating the best volleyball player possible.
I want athletes to leave my gym better volleyball players, of course - but also more confident, resilient, curious, competitive, and capable of handling hard things.
That means Iāll be honest with you. Iāll let you fail. Iāll ask more of you when I know you have more to give. Iāll care about the person you are when youāre not on the court. Iāll want to win, while still keeping an eye on the player you could become years from now.
And Iāll always believe thereās room for volleyball to matter a lot without it having to be your whole life.
Might be controversial... but what else is new :)
I want you trying new techniques, taking risks and getting uncomfortable. If youāre never failing, youāre probably not learning anything new.
Your effort, engagement, attitude, communication, and how you treat your teammates matter to me just as much as your skill.
Iāll tell you what youāre doing well AND what needs to get better. Honest feedback is part of getting better.
Different athletes need different things from me. Fair coaching doesnāt always mean identical coaching.
There are too many levels, programs and paths for me to decide your ceiling at 12, 13 or 15. Keep learning, keep getting better and see where it takes you. I believe there's always a spot for you.
Not because you canāt do it. But because you may need to become undeniable in other areas of your game.
I want to compete, and I want to win. But I wonāt sacrifice what could make you a better player next year just to make you more useful to me today.
Move differently. Learn different skills. Compete in different environments.
Train hard. Fuel your body. Recover. But go to the birthday party. Eat the cake. Spend time with your friends. Take a day off (or many!). Balance doesnāt make you less committed.
I want you to learn how to struggle, compete, communicate, sit on the bench, fail, respond... and then keep going.
