What is underemployment?

As a recent college graduate, you have a job, but it doesn't fully utilize your skills and education. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York reports that the underemployment rate for has risen to 41.8% in 2025—the highest level since 2020. And according to the Burning Glass Institute, 52% of bachelor's degree graduates are underemployed within a year of graduation.

Even more troubling: a decade later, 45% STILL don't hold jobs requiring their degree. For millions, it's become a very expensive key to nowhere. This ties directly to Battered Career Syndrome.
