RunwithJenn

RunwithJenn Helping you find your inner runner and achieve all your running goals. In 2009 I made a conscious decision to better my life. I began running Spring of 2009.

I began taking yoga classes and started running. I met with a nutritionist and started changing the way I ate. It started with 20 steps down my driveway. My first race, a 5k, was July 2009. Over the years I have found that I LOVE to run. I have run numerous 5K's, some 10K's, a bunch of half-marathons. I have added cross-training such as yoga, weight lifting, Blast and bike riding with my husband.

Sometimes the workout out is 20-30 minutes...sometimes it lasts over 4 hours. Nutrition was always one of my biggest struggles. In 2002 I weighed close to 200lbs. I have pictures to prove it, but never got on the scale. I had a friend that helped me pay attention to what I ate and I have slowly gotten better. My biggest struggle has been eating the correct foods to fuel my fitness. And I think I have finally found the answers. Join me, follow me, be a part of my team. Together we can become what we strive to be.

I spent the weekend relaxing. I slept in both Saturday and Sunday. I didn’t plan for a run either day. I walked 2.5 miles along the beach Sunday morning. It was a pretty great weekend.
So this morning I really wanted to run. I met up with the girls and we conquered our Monday morning miles. Our slowest one over the last few months. One of us ran 50+ miles for her birthday Friday into Saturday. One of us crashed a 10k PR in Boston. One of us is having a really hard time breathing.
Each mile did get faster. That does make me smile. I finished stronger than I thought I was going to. Very happy about that. I won’t be able to join the next Monday, but we’ll be back at it in July. Sharing early morning Monday miles trying to push each other to a strong finish. Chasing fast people makes you faster. Sooner or later.
How do you train to get faster?

It’s been a couple of days. A couple of days of running and gym workouts. A couple of days of time spent with friends. Friends that are part of my family.

Sometimes a run is just a run. Sometimes a run is part of a training plan. Sometimes the run is a race. Many times the run is about who’s beside you.
The friends you make through running will be by your side for life. They will cheer from the sidelines, pull you or push you on your training journey, or just run beside you. They will listen, they will tell you stories, they will offer advice, they will talk you into trying new goals. You run with them, you laugh with them, you cry with them...you live life with them.
When I started running I didn’t know what kind of journey I was about to embark on. I didn’t know that I’d find life long friends. I didn’t know they’d help me through so many experiences and life changes, and share so many adventures.
I do know that now though. I have an amazing running family. One that I get to live life with, to share miles with, and share life with. They are always there for a hug, a shoulder, or an ear.
One of the greatest friends running had brought me, Henry St John. I’m forever grateful for the few years that he was part of my life.
He created the Run4Fun group. I joined in 2013, after I moved to the area. I thank Henry for bringing so many of us together. Henry may no longer share the miles with us, but we haven’t lost his spirit and support. We aim to keep the group as he always wanted it - inclusive, supportive, and most of all FUN. “No one runs alone”. We all have someone who will keep us company, at least for some of the route. No one finishes alone. The group is for all people, all paces, all distances, all levels. Henry helped create it, we help keep it going.
Have you joined us for a run?

If I run on a Monday it’s usually really early. Before I coach class. I hadn’t heard from anyone yesterday til after I went to bed. I had checked the weather before I laid down and saw cool temps and rain forecasted. So I didn’t reach out to the others either.
I did end up running today. One of my amazing trail running ultra friends came over and helped me get some trail miles run. 5 miles, 4.5 in the woods. Trails and hills and single track and roots and a rock. The rock jumped out of the ground and tackled my foot. I may have a bruise when I wake up.
The trails felt good. I have a 20 mile mountain race I’m signed up to do this summer. That will be a challenge. I’d like to run some more trails. Maybe even try a mountain before the race.
What is your summer challenge?

Today has been pretty special. Again.
Another 5k for my girl and I. Again sub-40. I think it’s our 8th race together. I know it’s our 4th one this year.
It was warm to start, though not as warm as Thursday night. The sun was shining full on us, unless we were under the trees.
We started the run. We made it more than a mile. We walked. We ran. We wore water. We ran. We walked. We sprinted to the finish line. We got it done! I’m so proud of this girl. December 2024 is when we met. She had never run before. Now she’s crushing 5Ks and still looking for new goals to conquer (longer goals).
After the race I headed to RI. My home state. My nephew’s last swim meet is today. Spent the late afternoon cheering him on. Spent the late morning cheering on my niece at her swim meet. During the meets I spent time with family. For lunch, I got together with my high school/college roommate friend. We walked up & down Thayer St, a return to college memories. I’m feeling pretty nostalgic. There were so many cute RI things I wanted to buy in this one store we went into. RI is just one stop in this life of memories and adventures. Now I get to build the in MA.
What adventure to you conquer today?

Today was another epic goal crushing day. A friend ran her longest run ever! 15.5 miles. Her first long run in her marathon training. She finished strong.
Before I left the house I wondered why I was running 15 miles. Who makes these decisions? After we started I wondered how I was going to run 15 miles. It felt hard. I was very comfortable being at the back of the pack. By the time we were done with the 2nd loop (10 miles done) I was ready to go. One more loop. Only 5 more miles. We got them all done. I added one more mile by looping back for our last few people.
I also took the time tonight to plan out my training plan from now through my last marathon of the year in November. I’ve got a decent amount of races on my calendar. Starting tomorrow, straight through 11/8. I’m ready. They’re all going to be fun. They’re all going to be shared with friends. I’ll be running my 50th marathon on 9/13/2026. Amazing for sure. Can’t wait to celebrate that one! Hoping to share the finish line with friends that day!

Woohoo!!!! It’s a night to celebrate. My girl just crushed her goal.
We ran the Millennium Running Happy Hour Hustle 5k tonight.
It was hot. My watch recorded 91° at the start. Our goal was to run the first mile. Then continue with the program we’ve been following for the last week. The heat took a toll. We did run the first mile. Faster than our last race together. The next 2.1 miles were a combination of walking and running. Trying to keep breathing under control and heart rate down. Trying to not got too over heated. The water bottle was used more for spraying down than it was for drinking.
We crossed the finish line. We figured out our time and I got to see her glow. Her smile huge.
I can’t wait to see what she does at our next 5k

This morning I was ready to run. I was up and out of the house on time. The sun was already shining when I pulled into the parking lot. I wish the early morning sun was around for a little longer than it actually is.
We ran a big hill today. One of my favorites in the area. As we were heading up, the sun was on our left. You could see it fully above the horizon. It was shining behind the grapevines. It was a reminder of the beauty in the world. The quietness that you can find if you look. The stillness of the earth even when your world is all shook up. I took a deep breath as I ran, staring at the sun, letting it settle in my soul.
At the end of the day, my babe and I caught the sunset on the lake. We watched a spider weave its web. I don’t know if I’ve ever watched a spider before. It was neat to see the web form. The sunset, as usual, was beautiful. Another moment to breathe. Another moment to be grateful for my day.
Did you take a moment to yourself today?

Sometimes you just want to run. Even though I raced yesterday I wanted to get back out there this morning to start the day with some miles. I reached out to see if my early morning girls wanted to share miles. I set my cloths out and realized I’d likely run whether or not the girls joined me.
Luckily I had company. It’s easier to run with company. I’m quicker when I run with company. Our pace was solid for the 5 miles. Our final average pace was 8:39 minute mile. Each mile got faster. I love that we’re able to do this. Conversations the whole way.
I’m blessed to have found running friends. I’m blessed to have non running friends. Friends I can talk to and share experiences with.
Sometimes life reminds you to take a moment and tell those around you how much they mean to you. Sometimes life reminds you how short it can be. Sometimes you need to take a moment and tell others how much you appreciate and love them. Sometimes you need to stop, look around, give hugs and accept hugs.

Worcester Firefighter 6k My first 6k race. One of my friends invited me to join her and her friends at the race. I signed up. We traveled down together. Three runners and two cheerleaders. Not sure how we didn’t get a picture of us all together.
It was a a sunny warm morning. I had offered to pace my friends. They suggested I just go for it and chase my own personal race. I had brought both my racing sneakers and a second pair. I found another friend in the porta potty line that had done this race before. She explained the course was two 3k loops. That helped us know what to expect along the run. There was a hill. Just before the start of the 2nd loop, so also as we finished.
I decided to put on my racing sneakers and headed up toward the front of the pack. Though I was still too far from the line for a quick start. There were over 1000 finishers. After I got around some other racers and walkers, I settled into a nice comfortable pace. I concentrated on breathing and moving. One water break each loop. It was a pretty great course. Towards the end, up that last hill, I had my eyes on passing one runner. As I finished, someone said I was in the wrong side of the shoot. I had followed the signs. I guess those were only for the first loop. I lost a few seconds as I found someone to open the gate and let me through to the correct side. My finish was good enough for 4th in my age group! I’m always proud if I finish in the top 10.
After I completed my race, and not finding the guys around the finish line, I headed out for my friends. For real though I would have headed out even if I had found my babe.
I added another mile to my run. I saw so many other friends as I was running back to find my girl. After finding them I joined them back towards the finish line. I got them to run up the hill as I turned off the course and walked towards the finish, more water, and my babe.
It was a fun morning, and afternoon. After the race and finding some more of my friends, we headed out to lunch, the ice cream. A good end to a good weekend.
How did you make yourself proud today?

This morning was kind of epic. I decided to run the second loop. I decided I didn’t need 12 miles, but was totally ok with 8ish.
The second loop stayed around 7am. Around mile two we saw a small group of runners heading toward us. We thought we knew them and said hi, and waved. They crossed the street an we all realized we didn’t know them. They were from NY and were in town for a wedding last night. A friend from their run group got married, and the runners were sharing some miles before their trip home.
They joined us! We shared the remaining 5 miles together. We climbed hills. We talked about races. We became Strava friends. We made plans to race together this fall and next winter. So many stories. Lots of smiles, and laughter, and support.
To find a small group of runners with the same love of running and running for fun and supporting each other was pretty cool. During our conversations we realized just how similar our running groups are. I really hope to see the at races this fall and next January. Maybe a road trip to NY needs to happen too.
