One of the more frustrating parts of living with EDS/hyper mobility is that injuries can happen when you least expect them.
I recently hurt myself stretching before a simple walk in my neighborhood.
Not during an intense workout.
Not hiking.
Not lifting heavy.
Stretching.
That’s the difficult reality of connective tissue disorders sometimes – things that are generally considered “healthy” or harmless can still create problems if our bodies lack enough stability to support the movement.
So lately, my focus in Pilates has been less about increasing flexibility and more about building strength and support.
My PT currently has me following a tendinitis protocol, focused on progressive strengthening, and it’s been such an important reminder:
Hypermobile bodies often don’t need more mobility. We need more stability for the mobility we already have. I don’t need to be doing end range stretching.
Learning to work WITH my body instead of against it continues to be one of the greatest lessons in this journey.
Pilates for real-life adventures 💛
