The Chorus in the Sky

As I walked out after feeding this morning, I looked up and saw a flock of birds moving across the sky.

Then I heard them.

The ravens.

Two ravens flew south, calling back and forth to me as they passed. They stayed with me for a little while, their voices carrying through the morning.

Above me, the vultures began to circle.

One… two… then nearly ten or more, slowly turning together in the sky.

Somewhere in the distance, a kingfisher called out.

And then, as if the conversation had moved from the heavens down to earth, I looked into my backyard and found two juvenile crows sitting together, talking to me.

A whole chorus.

Raven.
Vulture.
Kingfisher.
Crow.

Each one arriving in its own way.

I don’t always know what nature is trying to say.

But I have learned to listen.

Sometimes the message isn’t in one particular bird or one particular moment.

Sometimes it’s in the sequence.

In the movement.

In what arrives…
what circles…
what calls…
and what comes close enough to sit beside you.

Today, I simply listened.

And somehow, it felt like the wild was speaking.

Hooves & Harbingers.
The hearts, wings, and wild things that remind us we are never truly separate from nature.
