Life Update: Hip Injury, Martial Arts Pause & My Guitar Journey

This is a real update on where I’m at right now.

After over three decades of martial arts training, I’ve had to make a difficult decision. With my right hip already replaced and now issues starting in my left hip, I need to step back from training for the foreseeable future and focus on long-term health.

At the same time, I’ve been putting my energy into something new that I genuinely enjoy: building and playing guitars.

What started as curiosity quickly turned into a real passion. I’ve been assembling, setting up, and refining guitars, and I’m now starting to sell some of my builds.

This channel may start shifting in that direction, but I’m still figuring that out. Let me know what you think about the transition and whether you think I should change the name of the channel or keep it as is.

If you’re interested in the guitars I’m working on, you can check them out here:

Appreciate everyone who’s been following the journey so far. This isn’t the end of anything, just a shift in direction.

Martial Spirit in Young Hearts, Lions Leaping Across Cultures —
Han Men’s Year-End Cultural Exchange Chronicle
Before the Lunar New Year, Han Men was invited to Taipei City to host a cultural experience event titled “Little Lion Dance Masters.” It was not only a festive celebration before the holidays, but also a meaningful moment of cultural awakening for children.

The participating students all came from a well-known English language institute. When we received the invitation, we reflected on this: since these children are immersed daily in an English-speaking environment, why not let them encounter authentic traditional Chinese martial arts within a familiar linguistic atmosphere?

As it happened, Mark Laoshi was available that day, so Han Men invited him to join us. Mark Laoshi is the head of the international online martial arts platform Tsang Wu Ge – Ba Gua Shu. Founded last year, Ba Gua Shu is dedicated to promoting traditional martial arts in modern ways and connecting with martial arts enthusiasts around the world.

On the day of the event, the children watched a foreign teacher lead them in fluent Chinese through fundamental martial arts training: horse stance, punching, turning movements. The surprise and curiosity were written clearly on every face.

“So foreigners can speak Chinese and teach kung fu?”
“How does he know martial arts?”

These innocent questions were the most genuine sparks of cultural exchange.

As the lion dance drums began to sound, the children lifted their heads proudly, holding the lion head steady, moving with coordinated steps to experience the spirit and vitality of the lion. Through practicing the basics of martial arts, they also felt for the first time the embodied wisdom behind a simple truth: one must stand firmly in order to go far.

In that moment, language was no longer merely a school subject—it became a bridge leading into the depth of culture.

In truth, foreigners coming to Taiwan to study Chinese in order to learn martial arts is not a recent phenomenon.

As early as the 1970s and 1980s (ROC calendar years 60s and 70s), many foreign martial arts enthusiasts traveled great distances to Taiwan. In order to truly understand the essence of Chinese martial traditions, they committed themselves to learning the Chinese language. They understood that martial arts are not merely physical techniques, but a cultural language in themselves. To deeply enter the path of traditional martial arts, language is an indispensable key.

For this reason, martial arts have long served as an important pathway through which Chinese culture reaches the world.

Just last month, a professor from Academia Sinica visited Han Men to interview Shifu Han Ji-Xiang, conducting research on martial arts culture and the motivations behind language learning. Their findings echoed the same truth: behind many foreigners’ decision to study Chinese lies a deeper aspiration—a longing to understand Chinese martial arts.

From children’s joyful lion dance steps, to a foreign teacher instructing in Chinese; from the international wave of martial arts learners decades ago to today’s academic research—everything reinforces our conviction:
Martial arts are not merely the transmission of technique,
they are the embodiment of cultural confidence.

Han Men will continue building bridges between tradition and the international community, allowing more people to witness the depth and warmth of Chinese martial arts. We also hope that more children, through their practice, will come to understand their own culture—and through exchange, see a broader world beyond.
