The UK government has confirmed that Great Western Railway (GWR) will return to public ownership on December 13. Serving London, the South West, and South Wales, the operator will transition to the state-owned "Great British Railways" organization.
The Department for Transport called the move a "significant moment," aiming to prioritize passengers over shareholders. Local leaders have welcomed the news, hoping for more frequent services and improved infrastructure. GWR joins other operators like Greater Anglia in public hands, following the nationalization of rail services in Wales and Scotland.
