In 1991, when Millennium cofounder Ann Marie Hudsonβthen a 28-year-old fresh off the plane from New Yorkβtook over the bankrupt Moro Landis Studios building, her hiring criteria were simple: βGood people, good vibe, and pure talentβeven if theyβre a nobody off of a bus.β She was irreverent about rΓ©sumΓ©s and intolerant of attitudes. She took a chance on first-timers, and gave as much weight to Martha Graham as she did to House of Xtravaganza. She placed a sign reading βNo racism, no sexism, just danceβ on the door of the building to drive home her message. And it worked. Millenniumβs leave-the-drama-at-the-door policy bred a creative atmosphere free of prejudiceβand especially sexism.
