The Number She Wears
This weekend, through nine baseball games, I wore my boys’ numbers with pride.
Not because the number is just a number.
Because to a baseball mom, that number carries a heartbeat.
It carries the boy I prayed for.
The boy I packed snacks for.
The boy I watched strike out, get back up, run hard, and keep going.
The boy I thank God is alive, healthy, and able to play the game he loves.
But this Memorial Day weekend, those numbers felt heavier.
Because long before we wore numbers on jerseys, soldiers wore numbers too.
Draft numbers. Service numbers. Unit numbers. Numbers tied to names, families, hometowns, and futures. Numbers carried by men and women who were called to something bigger than themselves.
Some came home.
Some did not.
And today, we remember that the freedom to sit behind a backstop, cheer for our children, wear their numbers, and watch them play under an open sky was paid for by those who sacrificed everything.
As mothers, we know sacrifice. We give our time, our sleep, our comfort, our hearts. We carry worry our children never see. We love so deeply it aches.
But today, we do not compare our sacrifice to theirs.
We honor theirs.
We remember the loved ones lost in war. We remember the families who wore grief long after the uniform was folded. We remember that we are where we are today because brave souls went before us.
So this morning, I thank God for the number I get to wear.
And I thank Him for the names and numbers of those who gave us the freedom to wear them.
May we raise boys who play hard, live grateful, respect sacrifice, and understand that pride in a number should always come with humility in the heart.
our prayer…
Lord, thank You for the children we get to cheer for, the freedom we get to live in, and the heroes who made that freedom possible. Help us remember those who served, those who never came home, and the families who still carry their love. May we wear our children’s numbers with gratitude, and may we never forget the names behind the sacrifices that came before us. Amen.
