This may be a good tactic at the college and professional level. My guess is that he was a pretty good motivator. Coaches who understand and apply the principles of motivation based on different needs of athletes, have an distinct edge. The goal for both coaches and parents is to get your athletes to become self motivated. But at some point, they are either motivated or be replaced by those that are.
