West River Sports proudly marked the conclusion of the highly successful 2023 Fall Soccer season on Weston Island fields. The beautiful day saw an enthusiastic final practice for over 140 West River Muskrats, including children from kindergarten to 6th grade, alongside dedicated parents and more than 30 volunteer coaches. The post-practice celebration included apple cider and cookies, recognition for 6th graders graduating to middle school soccer next year, and gratitude expressed to the community members who made this season a major success.
Special credit and thanks were extended to volunteer coaches as well as Ali Marino, Will Reed, Nick Careless, Bill Drunsic and Chris Langley for their tireless efforts in making the soccer program flourish. As the ceremony neared its end, a heartfelt presentation of an honorary #10 Muskrat jersey was made to Nate Chaves from David Chaves Excavating.
This season faced adversity, with severe floods just over 100 days prior causing significant damage to the Weston Island fields, including rocks, debris, erosion, and destruction that initially seemed insurmountable. Yet, thanks to the rapid response and hard work of Nate Chaves and his team, including heavy equipment and volunteer support, the fields were brought back to life. These fields, initially created by Nate's father, David, over 30 years ago, have been a cornerstone for youth soccer. Despite challenges posed by floods in 2011 and 2023, Muskrat soccer on Weston Island stands as a symbol of resilience and dedication. The beaming smiles and cherished moments among the young Muskrat players highlight the special nature of this program and place. Go Muskrats! See you next Fall!
