Saving lives - one little swimmer at a time.

06/17/2026

Most parents worry about the child who is hesitant around water.

I worry about the child who can’t stay away from it.

The toddler who runs straight for the pool.
The preschooler who loves jumping in.
The child who is fearless around water.

Those are often the children who require the most layers of protection because they’re naturally attracted to water and may seek it out when adults aren’t expecting it.

That’s why we focus on more than swimming.

We teach children how to:
✅ Find air
✅ Roll to a float
✅ Rest and breathe
✅ Get themselves to safety

Because accidents don’t happen when a child is prepared and expecting to swim.

They happen when a child unexpectedly finds themselves in the water.

Water confidence is wonderful.

Water safety is what saves lives.

Let’s raise water-safe kids together. 🩵

The biggest water safety mistake isn’t a lack of swim lessons.

It’s assuming someone else is watching.

At family gatherings, pool parties, and BBQs, adults naturally relax when there are lots of people around. Unfortunately, that often creates a dangerous gap in supervision because everyone thinks another adult has eyes on the water.

That’s why we recommend assigning a Water Watcher whenever children are near water.

A Water Watcher’s only job is to actively supervise the water for a set period of time:
✔️ No scrolling
✔️ No texting
✔️ No conversations
✔️ No distractions

After 15-20 minutes, switch with another adult.

Swim lessons are one layer of protection.
Pool fences are another.

But active supervision is still the first and most important layer.

The safest families don’t leave supervision up to chance.

Save this post and share it with someone who will be spending time around water this summer.

When most parents think about swim lessons, they picture long swims, perfect strokes, and confident laps across the pool.

But for young children, that’s not our first goal.

Our first goal is survival.

Can your child:
✔ Find air?
✔ Roll to a float?
✔ Rest when they’re tired?
✔ Get back to the wall?
✔ Stay calm long enough for help to arrive?

Those skills save lives.

Swimming is a sport.

Water survival is a life skill.

Every float, every rollover, every swim-to-the-wall repetition is helping build the skills that buy a child precious time in an emergency.

That’s why we do what we do.

Because confidence in the water starts with safety first.

Most parents think about teaching their child how to swim.

Fewer think about teaching them what to do in the first few seconds after an unexpected fall into the water.

That moment matters.

A child who can:
✅ Roll onto their back
✅ Find air independently
✅ Stay calm
✅ Rest and breathe
has a much better chance of staying safe while an adult responds.

At Water Safe Swim Lodi, we spend a lot of time practicing these foundational survival skills because swimming isn’t always the first thing a child needs in an emergency.

Sometimes the safest choice is to float, breathe, and wait.

Water safety isn’t about creating fearless kids.
It’s about creating capable kids.

Comment “FLOAT” if you want your child to have this skill before summer ends.

Parents are bombarded with water safety advice every summer. Unfortunately, some of the most common beliefs can create a false sense of security.

Myth #1: “My child wears a puddle jumper, so they’re safe.”

Myth #2: “They took swim lessons, so they’re fine.”

Myth #3: “I’d know immediately if my child was in trouble.”

The truth? Water emergencies often happen quickly and quietly.

The goal isn’t fear—it’s awareness.

The more layers of protection we put in place, the safer our children are around water.

Swimming skills matter. Supervision matters. Barriers matter.

No single layer is enough on its own.

Which of these myths have you heard before?

Summer means more pool days, more distractions, and more opportunities for layers of protection to matter.

A few simple habits can dramatically improve water safety with young children.

These are the things we recommend most often as swim instructors and toddler parents ourselves. 💙

Save this for your next pool day ☀️

For toddlers, survival swim skills should come first.

One of the most important things a young child can learn is how to:
find air
roll onto their back
and float calmly

Because toddlers don’t always have the strength, coordination, or awareness to “swim to safety” right away.

Floating buys time.

Time to breathe.

Time to stay calm.

Time for help to arrive.

And in water safety, time changes outcomes.
