As a new season of softball is among us, players and parents should realize that the most important things you can bring to the field have little to do with your speed, strength, or skill level…. it’s your attitude and your effort.
You won’t always be the biggest, strongest, or fastest player on the field. You won’t always have your best game. You’ll strike out, miss a fly ball, not pitch your best, or have days where nothing feels right. That happens to everyone, including the players you look up to. What sets great players apart is how they respond.
Showing up with a good attitude means choosing to stay positive even when things don’t go your way. It means cheering for your teammates, listening to your coaches, and believing in yourself even when you make mistakes. A bad play doesn’t define you, but your body language and how you react does.
Effort is equally important. Hustling on and off the field, giving your best in practice even when the coach isn’t looking, and pushing through when things get tough all matter more than being perfect. Coaches notice the girls who sprint out ground balls, who stay locked in during drills, and who keep working even when no one is watching.
The girls who grow the most in softball aren’t always the most talented at first, but they’re the ones who never stop trying. They ask questions, they accept coaching and tough feedback, and they keep showing up ready to work.
Softball is a game of failure, but it’s also a game that teaches life lessons. The attitude you carry and the effort you give on the field will help you not just in softball, but in life and everything you do.
