Happiness is just a workout away!

Although no official standards exist for the amount of exercise to optimize happiness, “if they did, most Americans would almost certainly fall below them—because most people don’t exercise enough, if at all,” Arthur C. Brooks wrote in October. The good news? The bar for a workout routine is relatively low.

“Most people have plenty of opportunity to get healthier and happier by doing something that involves no drugs or therapists, just a willingness to exert a little physical effort,” Brooks writes.
Researchers have shown that exercise strongly improves well-being. Not only can physical activity stimulate positive effects in the brain, but certain activities can also be especially beneficial for stress management or lead to increased confidence. “Most people who exercise regularly derive an improved feeling of community and accomplishment,” Brooks explains. “Indeed, for many, being athletic becomes central to their identity.”

Finding ways to incorporate exercise into your daily routine, however, can feel challenging. But no matter where you are in your fitness, there are ways to use exercise as a tool to boost your happiness. Find Brooks’s advice at the link.
