A horse can run from you.

A horse can charge you.

A horse can ignore you.

What a horse almost never does is walk toward you.

Slowly. Deliberately. Without flinching. Without performing.
One hoofprint at a time, the sky full of weather, the dunes holding their breath, closing the distance between his body and mine.

I lay on the sand and watched him come.

And somewhere in the middle of that approach, I remembered every person in my life who ever did this for me. Who walked toward me when walking away would have been easier. Who kept coming when the weather turned. Who did not explain themselves. Who simply arrived.
