Busy is not the same as productive.
You can spend all week polishing the comfortable and still avoid the one conversation, the one investment, the one offer that would actually change things. And every week you wait, that avoided work doesn't disappear. It compounds.

Read this if you're tired of hoping it works out and ready to make it work out.

Discomfort is not a signal to stop. It's usually a signal that you're standing at the exact edge where growth happens.

The problem is that busy work feels like diligence when it's actually avoidance. Nobody stages an intervention for the person who spent four hours color-coding a spreadsheet.

In my newest post, I walk through how the FORGE process helps owners name the real work, shrink the fear to a size they can act on, and build accountability that outlasts motivation.

Here's a question worth sitting with: what is the one task you've been avoiding by "staying busy"?

You already know what it is. You've known for a while. The comfortable work will always be there tomorrow, but the important work has a shelf life.

I lost a business during the 1980s recession, and I've spent the decades since studying what separates owners who break through from the ones who quietly stall. This pattern is one of the clearest dividing lines I know.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐲 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐩 𝐢𝐬 𝐊𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐅𝐢𝐱 𝐈𝐭.
You reorganized your inbox. You tweaked a button three people will click this month. You researched a tool you already own, designed a flier, scrolled social media for that magic bullet that will send your marketing efforts into the stratosphhere. By 5:00 you're exhausted, and you earned it, because you worked hard. But the one thing that would actually move your business forward? You didn't touch it.

There's a name for this: productive procrastination. It's avoidance wearing a business suit, and it's costing you more than you think.

My latest post breaks down the three things we're really avoiding, and how to name yours so it loses its power to hide. Link in the comments.

You've read the articles. You've compared the options. You've asked three people what they'd do. And you're still exactly where you were a month ago.

Here's the thing: that's not a character flaw. You're a thoughtful person who wants to do this right. The care you bring is real, and it's part of why you're good at what you do.

But somewhere along the way, "doing it right" turned into "not doing it at all." You keep researching and planning, but you never actually start. You're afraid of the wrong choice, so you make no choice. And every time you ask for more data, more opinions, more time, you somehow feel less confident, not more. That's the trap. It feels like progress because you're busy, but the loop is quietly costing you months you'll never get back. Overthinking isn't caution. Left alone, it's just a slower way of staying stuck.
I've sat with a lot of business owners frozen right where they are, and I've been there myself. What breaks the freeze isn't a better spreadsheet or one more expert opinion. It's a simple system that works with the way your brain is wired, rather than against it. For 40 years, I've helped people move from stuck to started, and it almost always begins with one honest page.

So, I built you a free worksheet, From Analysis to Paralysis. It's short on purpose. Here's how it works:
1. Name what's actually happening. You can't break a loop you won't admit you're in.
2. Walk the three-step system I use with clients when overthinking has them frozen.
3. Pick your one decision for today. Not the whole list. One.

Because if nothing changes, nothing changes. Six months from now, you can be standing in the same spot, still gathering, still comparing, still waiting for the perfect answer that is never going to show up. The window doesn't stay open forever, and the cost of staying frozen is always higher than the cost of one imperfect move.

Or you can feel what it's like to finally break the loop. To set a deadline and actually hit it. To trade the low-grade dread of "I should really deal with that" for the quiet confidence of someone who decided and moved. Progress, not perfection. That's the whole shift, and it starts with a single page.
You don't need more information. You need one decision. Let's go get it.

𝐋𝐞𝐭 𝐦𝐞 𝐠𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝐰𝐞𝐧𝐭.

The work got done. Money came in. And somewhere between the late-night invoicing and the weekend you gave up again, a quiet thought crept in: "I'm busy, and I'm making money, so why does it still feel like this could all fall apart?"
You're good at what you do. The side hustle proves it, the revenue is real, and the people who hire you keep coming back.
But nobody ever taught you the business side. So, you're winging the pricing, taxes, cash flow, and plan. There isn't a system holding any of it up, just you, running harder every week. Here's the hard truth I had to learn myself: hustle without a foundation isn't a business. It's a second job you can't quit, a trap you accidentally built for yourself. And that gnawing feeling that it's all one bad month from collapsing? That's not you being dramatic. That's the missing foundation talking.

I get it, because I've lived it. I built a business once, and I lost it. What turned things around wasn't more hustle or more passion. It was sitting down with someone who helped me put a real plan under my feet. For the last 40 years, I've been on both sides of that table, and now I help side-hustlers like you build the business you actually intended to build, not the one that owns you.

You don't need a 40-page document that dies in a drawer. You need one page you'll actually use. So, I built you a free workbook, The One-Page Business Plan. Here's how simple it is:
1. Download the workbook.
2. Work the seven short prompts, one at a time. Mission, pricing, revenue, marketing, and the critical actions that move the needle.
3. Finish with a single-page blueprint you can print, pin up, and build from every day.

Grab your free copy here: DOWNLOAD THE ONE-PAGE BUSINESS PLAN →

Because here's what happens if you keep winging it. You stay stuck in the chaos, leaving money on the table you can't even measure, until one day you either burn out or make a leap of faith and blow up the savings you worked so hard to build. If you're going to go all in, do it right.
Or picture the other version. You sleep at night because there's a plan under you. Your scattered side income becomes predictable, owned revenue that finally beats the old paycheck. And the people who matter start seeing you the way you've quietly wanted them to all along, as a real business owner, not someone "doing a thing on the side."
It starts with one page. Go get yours.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐂𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐃𝐨𝐧'𝐭 𝐁𝐮𝐲, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐅𝐢𝐱 𝐈𝐭

You built something good. You know it works, because your customers tell you so. But here's the hard truth nobody says out loud: a good product isn't enough to win the sale.
People still have to understand what you offer, why it matters, and why they should act now. When that takes too much effort, they hesitate. And when people hesitate, they leave.
I've watched it happen. Maybe you have too.

Someone pokes around your website, then clicks away without connecting. A prospect sits through your entire sales call and still can't explain what you actually do. Or they choose a competitor who isn't their best choice, just easier to understand.
Those are all signs of the same thing. Your message isn't doing enough work.
When people have to dig for a reason to care, most of them move on. You rarely hear why. You just see it in the numbers, the quiet drop-off, the calls that don't close.
So, before you spend another dollar on traffic, launch another campaign, or overhaul your sales process, stop and ask yourself one question:
Is our message clear enough that customers understand why they need us?
If the answer is no, that's your real problem. And the good news is, it's fixable.
Get the message right and everything downstream gets easier. Your website starts doing more of the selling. Sales calls get shorter because people show up already half-convinced. Your team stays consistent instead of winging it. And your customers always know their next step.

𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭'𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐠𝐞.
This is exactly what StoryBrand does. I help you say what you do and why it matters, in plain words your customers can actually repeat to others. When your business owner's path disappears in a fog of your own marketing, that's where I come in.
So, if your product is strong but your message is hard to explain, let's fix the message first.

I’m coaching a business owner who generates $ 500K+ a year.

He shared his struggle to close a $500 sale.

Not because he didn't believe in what he sold. He did, completely.

It was because nobody had ever given him a clear path through the sales conversation.

Pricing came up, and he flinched. Follow-up went out late. The close never really came.

Sound familiar?

I was listening to Jonny Holsten, CEO of Bridge Selling, on the StoryBrand Podcast this week. He made a point I've seen proven true over 40-plus years of working with entrepreneurs.

The #1 sales problem isn't product knowledge. It's no process.

When you don't have a repeatable structure, every sales conversation is a new experiment. And experiments are exhausting, especially when your income depends on the outcome.

The fix isn't more confidence. It's a clear path.

Know what to ask. Know when to introduce pricing. Know how to invite the next step without it feeling like pressure.

Your prospect doesn't need a pitch. They need a guide.

That shift changes everything.

What's the moment in your sales conversations that feels most uncomfortable? Drop it below. I read every comment.
