Pepperell’s Phil Baker, Class of 1971, was recently included on the official ballot for the Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame.
Phil was a 3-sport star during his Dragon days as a four year starter on the gridiron, hardwood, and diamond. He played QB for the 1967-1970 football squads, and is still in the Top 150 statewide in terms of career passing yards (5,449). The 1967 team was the 3-A North Division champs, losing to #1 ranked Carrollton in the region playoff. His junior season, he was named to the AJC All-State Team for Class AA. The 1970 team, his senior year, was the first Pepperell team to win 9 games, and held the best record in school history, until the magical 1990 season. For his football career at Pepperell, Baker contributed over 5,545 all-purpose yards, and 52 total touchdowns.
On the diamond, Baker was part of the 1970 State Champion Dragons baseball team. After his Dragon days, he signed to play with the University of Georgia, where he was a captain on the 1975 SEC Eastern Division Championship team. He was named to the SEC All-Academic team three times. After college, he signed with the Kansas City Royals organization as an undrafted free-agent.
Side note, in what has to be a state record, Phil Baker once struck out 37 batters in a single high school game that lasted over 15 innings, across 4 days of baseball.
Congratulations Phil on this exciting recognition. Dragon Country is proud of you!
