As a member of both our football and track & field family, we want to call on our community to support one of our athletes, Halen as he begins cancer treatment. Our hearts go out to him and his family, let’s rally around them with support!
Our football family received news no one ever expects to hear. Over the past six weeks, Halen and his family noticed a mass growing on his left tonsil. After several ER visits, an ENT specialist directed them to UC Davis, where Halen was admitted for emergency surgery. Doctors removed the tumor along with his left tonsil, and testing confirmed that Halen has Diffuse Large B‑Cell Lymphoma.
This week, he returned to UC Davis for additional testing to determine the stage and treatment plan. The diagnosis is Stage 2 — a relief in the midst of everything, as it could have been much more advanced. The cancer has not spread to his brain, spine, or bones.
Halen’s treatment will take about 12–16 weeks. Chemo will bring challenges — hair loss, nausea, and other side effects — but in true Halen fashion, he plans to be at practices and games whenever he’s able.
If you know Halen, you know he is strong in every sense of the word. Physically. Mentally. Spiritually. This is a tough battle, but it’s one he’s ready to fight — and win. One of the hardest parts for him is knowing he won’t be with his teammates and coaches on and off the field the way he planned this season.
But please know this: Halen is a warrior. With the love and support of his family, friends, teammates, and community, he will come back stronger than ever.
Halen has S.O.U.L. — and we’re all standing with him.
