Good Morning Lynx Families,
I wanted to take a quick moment to reach out as we gear up for what is shaping up to be one of the biggest summer basketball sessions in my three seasons here at Mattanawcook Academy. I also wanted to provide an update on the basketball program as a whole as we continue moving forward with our goal of bringing a Gold Ball back to Lincoln on the boys' side.
First, as many of you know, our longtime JV Coach, Brett Crocker, resigned at the conclusion of this past season. Brett was a tremendous contributor to our program and will be greatly missed. His dedication to our players and the success of our program played a major role in where we are today.
With that transition, I felt it was very important that we find a replacement and have that person in place before the summer season began so they could start building relationships with our players and help establish a strong foundation for the 2026-2027 season. I am very happy to announce that veteran coach Scott Lowell will be returning to the sidelines as our JV Coach and Varsity Assistant Coach.
Coach Lowell brings many years of coaching experience, along with a strong appreciation for old-school basketball values. Many of our players are already familiar with Coach Lowell, as he previously served as an assistant coach under Coach McDormand here at Mattanawcook Academy. I have had the pleasure of knowing Coach Lowell for several years through the travel basketball world and have always respected the way he approaches coaching and player development. I strongly believe he will bring a great deal of positivity, passion, and basketball knowledge to our program.
You may have noticed that we have started setting up teams within the GameChanger app. GameChanger is the platform we use during the regular season and will serve as our primary communication tool throughout the summer. The app allows us to communicate with players and parents regarding practices, games, schedule changes, and other important information all in one place.
I have begun loading games and practices into the app and have currently divided players into Team 1 and Team 2. While your child may be assigned to a specific team, there will be opportunities throughout the summer for players to move between teams depending on availability and developmental opportunities. Coach Lowell and I will evaluate this regularly throughout the summer with two primary goals in mind:
Ensuring players receive meaningful playing time.
Providing players with the development necessary to be successful moving forward.
We understand that summer can be a busy time for families. Many of you have vacations planned, and our players may be involved in other sports, camps, and activities. We encourage our athletes to stay active and participate in as many opportunities as possible. We simply ask that you communicate with us through the RSVP feature on GameChanger or reach out directly if you know your child will be unable to attend a practice or game. This helps us tremendously with planning and roster management.
As a reminder, our summer basketball program is completely free of charge. Uniforms will be provided for all players and will be collected and washed by our coaching staff after games. We ask that players take good care of the uniforms while they are in their possession. Thanks to the incredible support of several local business sponsors, we were able to purchase these uniforms and provide them to our athletes at no cost. We want to ensure they last for years to come.
There will be one weekend this summer when we will be seeking assistance from all of our basketball families. LoonFest Weekend is our largest fundraiser of the year and plays a major role in supporting our basketball program. This year, we are expecting more than 40 teams to participate in the tournament.
We will be looking for volunteers to assist with:
Concessions
Admissions
Scorekeeping
Games will be played at both Mattanawcook Academy and Mattanawcook Junior High School.
As we get closer to the event, I will send out a sign-up sheet and encourage everyone to help where they can. The girls' basketball program will also be involved, but the more volunteers we have, the smoother the event will run. We greatly appreciate any time and assistance you can provide.
Again, I want to thank you for signing your child up for our summer basketball program. We are excited to work with your player and continue building a culture of growth, development, and success. We believe this summer will be a tremendous opportunity for our athletes, and we are looking forward to what we hope will be a special season and a run at a Gold Ball this winter.
Thank you for your continued support.
Go Lynx!
