So, did you get a puppy to distract from the current media, cultural, and election chaos? Seeking a quiet place where the noise can't follow?

Want to come hang out with others who did the same and play games, get active with toys and treats, and maybe even do a little civilizing the chaos that is also a puppy? :)

Class starts one week from tonight at 6:30 p.m. and I promise we won't think or talk about anything other than puppies for at least an hour. Maybe squirrels, 🐺 but mostly puppies.

Good morning Jill,

Yesterday was the best day that Buster and I have had.

Buster and I walked in the neighborhood 3x practicing, “come”. At our granddaughter’s x-country meet, we did the same and in our daughter’s back yard. I think he did well! Loves the cheese!

No bites, either. Later, Buster slept 11 hours.

I realized that I was doing more yelling, swearing and trying to correct so often when we first arrived home.

It’s different now, thanks to you. I am petting Buster more often and being quiet with him.

It is certainly a work in progress and one day at time….

Many of my earliest driving lessons were with my Grandpa, on an empty fairgrounds in rural South Dakota where nothing was moving but me. Practice with starting and stopping, turning and parking, backing up and controlling speed was so so much easier when no other cars were around.

After a few weeks of practice, guidance, and advice, Grandpa said: Now we're going to go out on to the county road and drive the ten miles from Salem back to Spencer.

Oh, no, I objected, unsure if I was ready yet.

Jill, he said, it's the same skills. Its just a slightly more complicated environment. Practice with paying attention to what is relevant and important for success and safety, and you'll be just fine.

And so it is with our dogs as well.

Your dog isn't 'reactive', nor does he need (or benefit) from a 'psychological' assessment or diagnosis. You can just get right on with the work (and the fun) of teaching, training, and practice working together.

Trained dogs pay primary attention to their owners and learn that most other external elements can be safely ignored. Not unlike our driving experiences. The environment might be complicated, but with your guidance and direction your dog can become quite discerning -- and when you attain that connection it can be pretty wonderful.

Dogs can and do learn to ignore each other, and even ignore barking dogs behind a nearby fence.
