These aquatic insects life cycle spans 1-3 years before they emerge as adults, which means they can be found year round in clean cool streams. Stone flies are very good at clinging to rocks and downed trees due to the little double claws on each of their legs however they are not great swimmers and cn end up swept into the drift of stronger moving pools. Unlike Mayflies, and Caddis, which emerge up through the water collum to the water surface. Stoneflies emerge to hatch by crawling to the banks of their streams and molt.
Stone flys are great and very versite pattern to fish and always keep stocked in thw fly box. They are a great for general nymphing, or euro nymphing to recreate a stone fly crawling along that was swept up by the current into a large pool or you can swing swing them towards the bank to create the effect of a stone fly making its journey out of the creek in order to sprout wings and mate. You can use it individually or as an attractor if you fish multiple flies.
