Youth Development I asked the question “How old is your son? Audience (parents) response - 14! That’s their chronological age. They have a social and emotional age. They have a cognitive age. How old is your son? Do you know your son?

If you're a sports-parent, a coach, or an athletic director who's tired of watching potential go to waste, this is for you.

Talented athletes peak early — then fall apart when it matters most.

It's almost never about talent. It's mindset.

For 20+ years I've worked with athletes, coaches, and families — and I've watched the same pattern over and over. So I built a system that installs three things into every athlete:

✅ How to set a goal they actually want
✅ How to find a new path when the first one closes
✅ How to keep going when nobody's watching

I call it the Trilogy of Hope Mindset — and once it's installed, it doesn't stay on the field. It shows up in their grades, their attitude at home, and every hard thing they face after the game is over.

Coaching Hope

Mental Health then Ball

Trauma, Adversity, and the Challenges of Life

Trauma, the bad things we endure, negatively impacts our level of hope. Untreated and unaddressed trauma can cause long-term damage mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and physically. Here is the best definition of trauma to use going forward toward hope.

Trauma results from an event, series of events, or set of circumstances that are experienced by an individual as physically and emotionally harmful or threatening.

While there are many ways to define trauma, most definitions come close to this and focus on situations where someone has no control over what is happening to them or those around them.

The good news though is that rising hope reduces (softens) the impacts of these types of traumatic experiences. But we must learn how to talk about the bad stuff and then engage in physical and mental efforts that help us release trauma from our body. If trauma is part of your story, practice telling it to someone you trust.

The Irreplaceable Value of a Father (Part 1)
We love our mothers. Mothers are one of the first indications of the sovereignty of God in our lives. Mothers give us life – without them – we couldn’t exist. It’s no SURPRISE that most children’s FIRST word is mom or a variation of that. Mothers are often a child’s FIRST teacher. Mothers TEACH us to have CONFIDENCE and BELIEF in OURSELVES. One of the most meaningful roles that a mother plays – is that of nurturer. Mothers are the emotional backbones of the family – where everyone’s feelings are held. No ONE can ever REPLACE our mothers. We can NEVER pay BACK for whatever a mother has DONE and continues to DO for us.
However – CONTRARY to popular CULTURE – God has made FATHERS the STEWARD-leaders of their children - not MOTHERS and if we IGNORE the IMPORTANCE of this ROLE - we DO so at a great RISK. In his book - Fatherless America David Blankenhorn ARGUES that many of our SOCIETY’S worst PROBLEMS are LARGELY a result of America becoming an increasingly FATHERLESS society.
When AMERICANS are ASKED: Does EVERY child NEED a FATHER? Increasingly, they are answering NOT NECESSARILY! However, research PROVES otherwise:
1. FATHERLESS children are at a dramatically greater risk of DRUG and ALCOHOL abuse.
2. FATHERLESS children are TWICE as likely to DROP out of SCHOOL.
3. FATHERLESS teen girls are significantly more likely to ENGAGE in S*X.
4. TEENS from FEMALE-headed households are more likely to COMMIT criminal ACTS.
5. In a clinical study of DISTURBED Boys - the mothers HELD the BALANCE of POWER with regard to DECISIONS concerning the children in THREE-FOURTHS of these families.
6. The FATHER-CHILD interaction has been SHOWN to PROMOTE a child’s physical and emotional well-being.
7. A SURVEY of over 20,000 parents found that when FATHERS are involved in their children’s EDUCATION children were more LIKELY to enjoy school, earn better GRADES and participate in extracurricular activities.
It is not just the father’s PRESENCE in the home but the quality of the father’s involvement and Leadership that makes the difference.

Lecturing can become a potential stumbling block to developing leaders.

Engagement is key. It requires getting them up, moving, and talking.

Pose questions, get out of the way and believe that collectively they will figure it out!
