β¬οΈ More about Alice Coachman!
She grew up in the segregated South with no access to proper training facilities.
So what did she do?
ππ» She ran barefoot on dirt roads.
ππ» She practiced jumps with whatever she could find.
ππ» She trained anyway.
And she didnβt just participate. She dominated.
At the 1948 London Olympics, she cleared 5 ft 6β
in the high jump. Olympic record. Gold medal.
π₯ She became the first Black woman in history to win Olympic gold.
π₯ And she was the only American woman to win gold in track and field at those Games.
Her victory wasnβt just about sport - it sent a powerful message to every young black girl and aspiring athlete: you belong here.
Her legacy helped pave the way for generations of track stars who followed.
After the medals and the spotlight, she kept going.
She taught. She mentored. She started a foundation to support future athletes.
Thatβs what legacy looks like.
